So Ken Griffey jnr is the greatest player in baseball history?

Nolan Ryan was a great pitcher and I am not a fan of his.

Another pitcher I actually admired that many do not mention is Greg Maddux and is the only other pitcher besides Fergie Jenkins to strikeout three thousand batters and have less than one thousand walks.
...

Hell yes - maddux truly was great. He won 4 CYA to ryan's 0. Had a much better ERA percentage and WL percentage than ryan too.. One of the all time greats and far far better than ryan.

He just set a record at getting into the HOF. 99.3% of voters put him on their ballot. Previous record was 98.8% for tom seaver.

Griffey was fantastic his first 10 years but his next ten he was just a pretty good player. I expected him to get voted in yesterday but i thought he would get around 92% of the voters. He's maybe the 30th best player of all time.
I have lots of his rookie cards. He didn't take steroids

Dogging on Ryan is just plain stupid.

Lifetime ERA of 3.19. Hell in 87 he went 8 and 16 with a 2.76 ERA which LEAD THE LEAGUE at age 40..oh and he lead the league in SO that year too. Maddux went 15-14 in 2006 with a 4.20 ERA at age 40.

And Maddux whom you said had a MUCH better ERA? Lifetime ERA 3.16.

Your much better is 0.03

# of years Maddux had with an ERA over 4? Eight (I don't count call up year from the minors). Ryan....ONE, his last.

If you wanna pick a pitcher to match up against Ryan...get a better one. Maddux doesn't qualify just because he played on better teams.

Oh and did we mention 7 No Hitters? The HoF is an individual award, not a team one, or the would be nobody but Yankees in it.

I would pick Maddux over Ryan for a big start, and I would keep Ryan in my starting five with Maddux, Spahn, Johnson, and Koufax.

You can't read. I said ERA PERCENTAGE!!! That's era compared to the league era. Maddux played in a time when more runs were scored in a typical game. THINK

I mentioned earlier that nolan ryan never won a CYA though he did come close a few times. In MVP voting he never even came close. Best he did was 14th in the voting in 1974.

And, once again, you are out of step with common sense. But that's OK because this is only baseball.

A meaningless stat, as Maddux exited the game before the steroid era really began.

You completely ignored that Ryan pitched better on worse teams. Your fixation with "well Maddux played on better teams" is pathetic when considering pitching is the ultimate individual position in team sports.

HUH?? Maddux retired in 2008. He played in the thick of the steroid era though he did not use.

I don't know that ryan played on worse teams than maddux played on.. I do know that ryan's career era was only about 13% better than the league era. Maddux was 32% better.

Just a few that were better the Griffey.
The Babe
DiMaggio
Ted Williams
Willie Mays
Jackie Robinson
Cy Young
Lou Gehrig
Hank Aaron
Greg Maddux
Nolan Ryan
Curt Shilling
Randy Johnson

Robinson, Aaron, Schilling, Johnson, and Ryan are not better than Ken Griffey Jr. Schilling?

Slightly above average pitchers do not rack up 5000 strikeouts. They do not pitch seven no-hitters. (Hell, plenty of great pitchers don't pitch ONE!)

As i explained earlier, 7 no-hits is a fantastic INDIVIDUAL accomplishment but it's not a big deal for your team. Same as a 3-hitter as far as your team is concerned. And winning games for the team is what it's about. A 52% win rate is just slightly above average.
7 no hitters is the all time record along with more than 5000 strike outs. He was far above average. Did I say 7 no hitters.

No hitters are over-rated. A dominating pitcher that can stymie a line up for 27 at bats...not that big a feat. Orel Hershiser had a record of 59+ innings without an earned run being scored. That is most impressive since it encompasses consecutive starts.

The number of strike outs is impressive and his place in baseball lore is well earned. But the no-hitters are a questionable feat.

I did not want to get into sports but I was looking to see if anyone mention Koufax. good call.
Drysdale? Gibson? so many.

I don't know how you can discuss steroid guys? 60-70 HR suddenly? Pitchers heal up fast?
Keep the managers who paraded steroids out there, also. Larussa and others.

Then you don't know shit about baseball.

Actually, I would probably replace Spahn, with Pedro as the #1 starter. (Martinez, Koufax, Maddux, Johnson, Ryan...trying to split up the pitching styles as much as possible)

Spahn, imo, is probably the best among the six. Pedro would be a good fifth starter.

I think it's questionable if koufax belongs in the HOF. He was maybe the greatest ever over a 6 year stretch but his career was very short. He didn't win 300 games or ever 200 games or even come close to 200. A sensational "prime years" pitcher but not a great career.

I watched the game when both Ken and his dad hit back to back home runs...that was also as cool almost as cool as when Felix Hernandez pitched the perfect game which I was lucky enough to see in person and have the final scoreboard on my smart phone opening back ground. Another highlight is getting Robinson Cano and Richard Sherman's autographs.

I saw a young Koufax strike out 18 Giants, rookie Willie McCovey hit a home run that has not come down yet, and Wally Moon hit a 'moon shot' over the left field fence in the bottom of the 9th to win the game.
