A very good friend of mine works for one of 5 largest airlines in the world and described the issue of flight cancellations is due to factors like the restrictions the FAA has put on pilots actual flying time. This and many other elements make pilot scheduling so extremely difficult the factors. Pilots' union restrictions. Weather issues. All combined to make scheduling problems. Given that there is a FIXED number of pilots (growing smaller every year due to retirement, fewer military trained pilots, etc.) the total number of qualified, licensed pilots for this friend's company, is even smaller than the largest airline, Delta which has only 15,000 pilots to fly daily over 4,000 daily flights to more than 275 destinations on six continents. An average pilot is allow to fly 1,400 hours in any calendar year.

So you see this is a VERY major problem especially if there are regional and even national weather problems.
So just describing cancellations is interesting BUT the really point is why has this occurred?
1) National/regional weather issues
2) Shortage of licensed pilots allowed to fly.
