So I finally watched a Taylor Swift performance

Target audience....12 to 17 year old white girls... It never dawned on me until a poster mentioned that her talent isn't so much in music or dance but in marketing. Bingo

Keep in mind her target audience also ages with her, so the 12-17 year olds from 2008 are now 28-33.

Bingo ...I think you just nailed it.
Yeah... She is not untalented.
However she certainly does not stand with the greats... Maybe I was expecting too much because of the hype and buzz.
Swifts reputation is built on the backs of teeny boppers who have never heard the music of the 60's 70's or 80's.

They don't know what quality music even is.

I agree
While her concerts seem watchable, she is an average talent

Not great vocal skills, average guitar playing, her songs are nothing special

I have seen female vocalists at local bars who have more talent
Thanks for trying.

The problem is you all are just a bunch of old farts who just don’t get Taylor Swift.

Well..neither do I to be honest.

But needless to say, I remember my father going on about Rock and Roll bands as great no talents.

Now, Frank Sinatra..that’s where it’s at he would tell me.

He may have been right afterall.

Whats your favorite taylor swift song?

I don't know any, I'm not 14 years old and I don't listen to radio. My latest media use was this video:

My understanding from Swifties is Taylor does a lot of quick wardrobe changes, where there's not a lot of down time with the band playing. And her shows are long.
I really don't get the hype either.

Showmanship is a big part of the music industry these days; it's where the real money is now, not in selling songs on Spotify. A lot of great singers are boring showpeople, modest musical talent and a great concert show draws the big crowds and media attention.

After all the hype and fuss I figured maybe I should take a look. Unfortunately it was just about what I figured it would be.

Nothing special at all. I kept waiting for that burst of talent...It didn't show in vocal quality...the dance moves were mediocre and the choreography unimaginative and frankly boring. Not sure what she's trying to achieve.

if I had to guess I would say a poor mixed imitation of several more proficient artists from pop and modern venues only not as good as any of them.

What I get out of it is a great white hope thing....since people of color have more or less dominated the live entertainment aspect of our culture in the past 20 years or so.

Myself....I look for the talent not the skin color.

IMO, it's because musical talent (I mean real music) is all but dead in Murica today, so that a complete mediocrity like Swift seems so talented.

It's analogous to why so many claim that Trump is a "right-wing extremist", when he's actually an 80s democrat....That's how far left the Overton window has been jerked.

That has always been the case with rock and pop and country. Few now remember him but he always had a great show and everybody liked the vibes when he played somewhere and he drew big crowds, even though his voice wasn't very good. Just a nice man who made people feel good and dance.

My parents would never miss his show when he came through town, usually at the Crystal Springs Ballroom.

lol

Dead accurate

Since art is in the eye of the beholder I’d say you have to go by real measurements. People vote with their pocketbook for art and she is the 24th wealthiest woman and tied for the wealthiest female musician with Rhianna. So… kind of hard to say she isn’t the best female musician in the world.

Yes, I remember them changing up their marketing image after Jimi Hendrix and others came along and made another genre popular. They didn't sound anywhere near as good at it as he did, but it probably sounded cool to those still listening to AM radio.

People were trained to like them and think they were great. They were basically just a barbershop quartet with electric guitars and drums. So were Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, but they were marketed as 'rebels n anti-war and did drugs n stuff'; different audiences different fashion victims. I Iike more of their songs than Beatles stuff, but I don't lie to myself and pretend they're 'great musicians'.

Hendrix was a good guitarist

And he will be remembered for that skill

But his repertoire of songs is limited

Thanks for making my point. Try Fleetwood Mac's Then Play On, or Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells, then get back to us.

Still a much bigger influence than the Beatles, who were largely followers, not leaders.
