FYI:
- NO, not all teachers are liberals.
correct.
- NO, there is no vetting of prospective teachers for liberal political views.
Not officially.
- NO, conservative teachers do not "keep their mouths shut" for fear of repercussions.
Conservatives in any job tend to keep their mouths shut because we know it is inappropriate to bring up topics unrelated to work that tend to be devisive. Meanwhile some liberals view the workplace as a free speech forum with a captive audience.
- NO, unions do NOT order, influence, or demand any particular teaching topics or approaches to individual teachers.
They try to influence teaching, but administration determines curriculum.
- NO, local school districts do NOT take their marching orders from the federal government.
More to come...
They are influenced by federal dollars and guided by laws like IDEA.
- In 31 years of teaching, I have never seen a cross-dressing guest reader for students of any age.
Great, but it does happen. Once is way too often.
- On a quick stroll around the school this morning I saw exactly ZERO rainbow flags but saw an American flag in each classroom.
What state? I have seen very few rainbow flags or other leftie vitue signalling in Texas schools, either.
- I've never heard any of my colleagues try to push the idea that America is a terrible, evil country on their students.
Me neither, but it is Texas.
- I DO hear the Pledge of Allegiance recited every morning; "under God" and all.
Yes.
Good posts, kerp them coming.
From me as a 40-something year nonteacher, then an 18 year teacher:
Teachers who are conservatives will discuss with other conservatives once they get to know them. Conservatives are easy to identify through nonpolitical conversation.
Talks about grandchildren - likely conservative.
Calls cats "my fur babies" probable liberal, that kind of thing.
As a con I had conservative ideas about education before starting to teach. Some have been reinforced, while others have changed.
Examples:
I used to think it was wrong to tell boys not to fight back if bullied. Seeing it in practice, i think it is either insane or a deliberate attempt to de-masculinize male children.
I used to oppose medicine for ADHD. Now, the biggest problem I see with it is parents being inconsistent in making kids take it.
