Should "work until you are dead" be the national policy?

Exactly... Shapiro sits in front of a camera for one hour a day, and travels around giving speeches. That isn't "work".
Equating this to someone who is 80 years old should be roofing is stupid.

Everybody‘s working for the weekend….

Means you work to afford your time off. Most people understand it is your life and family that matters….not your employer.
For some, work is your whole value as a person. Take away the work and they have no reason for living

Noted podcaster and conservative thought leader Ben Shapiro said on his show Tuesday, “It's insane that we haven't raised the retirement age in the United States.”

He continued: “No one in the United States should be retiring at 65 years old. Frankly, I think retirement itself is a stupid idea unless you have some sort of health problem. Everybody that I know who is elderly, who has retired, is dead within five years.”

So, what do you all think, should everyone work until they are dead and just give up this silly idea of retiring?
I think it would depend on what kind of work you do.

I work behind a desk on a computer. There's no reason I couldn't continue to work until I was 70 if I wanted to.

On the other hand, my brother-in-law was a laborer. He was pretty much done by the time he was 55. Fortunately, his union gave him a pension and he took a minor job as a custodian. But he died relatively young anyway, before he could ever qualify for social security.

Such as?

I mean, if we get robots or AI working doing many of the jobs then it's possible people won't have to work at all... until then...
AI is just a search engine with an enhanced user interface. It really is not capable of doing the same as people. And AI can't install plumbing or a light switch or even cook dinner.
Also
AI has no creativity.

Meaning those with trade skills are still needed to get things done.

And the solutions to Social Security programs are not very difficult....but it would mean that our government would lose more power over the people it governs. And that's why we don't hear about them.

AI is a lot, lot more than a "search engine with an enhanced user interface"... the possibilities are almost endless.

At some point AI will be able to teach itself how to do things, and will do them quicker and better than humans.

There are plenty of things where this will be advantageous for humanity

AI can do plumbing. But AI will be able to design things to make plumbing better, more efficient and less likely to break, it can also control robots which may be able to install such things better and quicker.

Not all jobs will go, but a lot could.

Current AI models are not much more than what I described. They can't make decisions. Especially when there are two equally good options available.

Robotic technology is also really limited...they can't do like people and are subject to maintenance issues. Sure...they can design plumbing...but so can a plumber. But AI is prone to put a toilet in the living room too. (No modesty)

AI conglomerates data....it doesn't create data. It can't. AI only knows what you tell it....nothing more.

Much of Shapiro's human environment is comprised of professional intellectuals and comparable. Not too many ditch diggers, plumbers, body mechanics and such. The people he is referring to do not have "jobs," they write, give speeches, appear on talk shows, and shit like that.

For those who have jobs, the ethical thing to do is to retire as early as possible, unless there is a good reason why you cannot retire (e.g., paying off debts, supporting adult children). This is an ethical obligation we have to the following generations. DO NOT hold down a position that could go to someone younger.

When Democrats are done with the economy and the dollar we all will be the working poor till we die.

The younger generation does bring in novel technology to a position that older generations are not as adept at utilizing.

But it depends on the field and career as well. Retiring early in some fields is not a good idea...as the pool of labor is dwindling and not increasing.
Construction is such an almost lost art....kinda depressing. Nobody wants to learn these trades. They require years of training to be proficient at it. It takes 5 years for an electrician to be able to make adequate conduit runs on a regular basis. I don't know what it takes for a plumber.

And if an electrician quits without a skilled apprentice....there's no one to replace him.

But the future will be something else. Computers are getting faster and things are progressing at breakneck speed.

AI only knows what you tell it. We can tell it far more than we can tell a human.

I will turn 70 this year and still work.

My work keeps me engaged, it keeps me active, it keeps me motivated and it is a major part of my identity because what I do is who I am.

I don't plan on selling my business any time soon.

The OP is free to work until he's dead, may I suggest the construction trades? ... I applaud your effort to keep paying taxes so I can retire ... I wave at you types every morning yelling my thanks they're paying taxes so I can live the retirement life style ...

I set my clocks BACK an hour last weekend ... anyone who matters to me knows I'll be two hours late all summer long ... retirement ...

Republicans want you to spend your wealth in your golden years. So when you die you have nothing. The corporations want to take it all. The last corporation being the old folks home. Very expensive. And when you run out of money they start sucking off medicare.

Social security and medicare allow middle class people to retire. Let's say the average 65 year old American has $200k in the bank. Call it $700 a month in interest payments. You can't live on that. Especially if you have to pay for healthcare as a old person. Republicans are insane.

Now give that person $1300 a month in social security and suddenly they have $2000 a month to live on.

We as a society created social security. It's a great idea. It sucks if you die at 59 but great if yo live to be 79. It covers everyone who paid in.

How much have we paid in compared to how much has been taken out? What about all the people who pay in and don't college one dime? Does the money we put in have compounding interest?

Republicans say they'd do better if they didn't have to pay in. Liars. They know they'd just spend the money. Corporate America and Rich Americans know that's a lie. But they don't care. They just want the tax cuts but they have to cut something before they can get more tax cuts for themselves. Social Security and Medicare are their targets. And Republicans argue "it's their money".

If your purpose in life is your work, by all means keep working.

But for most people, work is a means to an end
Providing support, a security net, security

When you no longer need that job to support you, most retire

a. Do you need to work? Needing to work is a lot different. Give someone social security and most likely they'll quit their shitty job. It's nice you love your job. I do too. I'd be stupid to stop doing what I do when I hit 62. I just want to be able to do it if I choose to stop working. And I should be able to except maybe healthcare for a 63 year old is probably expensive. So I'm actually forced to work till 65.

BUT, I bet you at 65 I will look at how much more I'll collect if I wait 1 more year, and how much I make doing what I do, and I'll choose to keep piling up the money.

Especially when my boss will let me work from Florida. So I'll work remotely from Florida 5 months and from Michigan the other 7.

And I may tell my boss not to pressure me or ask me why I'm walking my dog at 3pm. Don't worry about it. I get my job done so leave me alone. If you want to retire me I'm ready. But I refuse to be on the clock for 8 hours. Fuck that at age 62-65. Life is too short.

And if he says "I have to cut your pay in half if you are a part timer" then I might do that too. Pay me half my salary plus a bigger commission rate. That way you are only paying me when I'm selling. When I'm not you're not paying me much. I would be had to replace at half my salary plus a higher commission. It's the salary and healthcare companies hate paying.

My brother is retiring at the end of the month. He's mid 50's. I bet after a year he will go into consulting or back to full time work. He makes $1 million give or take depending on the stocks so I suspect after a year of doing bucket list stuff, he will go back to work.

I think Ben finally has a good point. USMB posters are free loaders. They should get back to work instead of taking the governments money to post on here all day long. I mean... its socialism. You are all commies. At least that's what I hear about government solutions to problems.

If you work is who you are, then by all means work till you drop over dead.

I do not consider my work to be even a small part of my identity and have not since I left the Marine Crops active duty ranks 15 years ago.

Work is a means to an end, a means to get me the money I need to live how I want to live. After 5 more years I will no longer need it and will never work another day in my life.

It really depends on the job. If you have to get up and go into an office or factory and you have pressure, life is way too short to be spending your days that way. The guy you're talking to owns his own business. That's different than going to work for someone else for $15-$25 an hour. But if you like going into work, that's different. I love going into the office but hate getting up to get ready for it. And I hate having to be there 9 hours. That's bullshit. I love working remotely. I would never give this up. I am watching tv right now while talking to you waiting for a customer to send a PO.

I heard this recently. The only reason you love weekends is because you work. Take the work away and you don't love all 7 days. Then you're bored. Working makes you look forward to doing stuff on the weekend. Too many hours in the day to sit around doing nothing so may as well work.

The problem with most people is they don't have any money to do anything when they retire. So they are bored. First thing I will do is get a gym membership and my job will be working out for 3 hours a day. 1.5 hours exercising and 1.5 sitting in the pool/sauna. And talking to younger men, naked with my droopy dick and balls exposed. But that's my job and socialization every day.

I have a Ebike so I'd do that 3 days a week when it's warm.

Walk my dog twice a day.

I have a boat and live on a lake. I will get into fishing or just going out in the morning and drift while I sip coffee and play on my phone.

I find I can work and do all the stuff I love doing. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

P.S. Even if you have a lot, living is expensive. Consider working one more year just to give yourself a cushion. I was thinking at age 62 I will buy a place in Florida for $150K. Little condo. But those have a $500 a month dues. So maybe buying that place will be my motivation to work one more year. To pay for the place. Or actually it would probably take 3 years to pay for it. So that would be my reason to work till 65. Then I'll get bigger checks if the Republicans don't destroy the program before I cash out.
