Should we get the hell out of Afghanistan?

It breaks my heart to see mentally handicapped former Soldiers and Marines who were injured in combat used as political tools by either side. It was obvious from the git go when democrats who authorized Bush's use of boots on the ground undermined the mission when it seemed they might get a spike in the polls courtesy of the liberal media. Why did democrats keep the mission going when they had the total majority after Obama's victory and could have ended it? Why did they keep the mission going under so many restraints that the Army and Marines couldn't possibly be victorious on the battlefield? Because it's the way democrats operate.

The war in Afghanistan stalled out when we decided to fight a second war in Iraq. I don't think you can blame the democrats for those decisions.

Wars that go on too long suffer mission drift.

First of all it was the Neocon's think tanks that got us in there without proper equipment, preparation, and mission. Don't put that off any Democrat. What the Democrats supported the Neocons fucked up. It was the handouts to connected contractors which added to the mess the Neocons put the military into. Obama might have handled the mess he inherited on day one many different ways. Your statement that he should have pulled out on day one, if that is what you are saying, is nonsense. We can blame the other party all day and night on this board but when you blame Democrats for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan you'd better back the fuck up.

That said there was a lot of pain and suffering all around and that is something we must address as a nation who supports its veterans. We asked and they did, we owe them a little in return.

We should have been out by June 2002, but no we were into nation building. Right, George?

Maybe you are confused about Military missions. Harry Truman's adventure in Korea based on an executive order ultimately cost the lives of about 50,000 American Troops who were ill equipped for a campaign to liberate the entire peninsula. It's insulting to characterize the American Military with billion dollar stealth jets as being "without proper equipment" in Afghanistan. Democrats didn't have the heart for combat under a republican administration so they undermined the mission from the start. When the ball was in their court all the democrats could do was tighten up restrictions on the Military and guarantee that they could not win. Thanks to the left wing media nobody noticed that Americans were forced to fight under terms set by an enemy which was living in the 6th century.

The PNAC signatories were all dual citizens.

Pulling men and assets from Afghanistan was a mistake that diluted the momentum, stalled the war and extended it.

Don't fight the LAST war.. That is a common mistake.

I would have been satisfied if the Obama administration was willing to fight any war much less the last war. The Commandant of the Marine Corps was forced to humiliate a combat Marine by dragging him across the world to a court martial for the crime of ...pissing on the bodies of the dead enemy. The "war" in Afghanistan was reduced to patrols and IED casualties and the rules set in the 6th century. It's ironic that the media supported Bill Clinton's carpet bombing of Yugoslavia but Afghanistan artillery units couldn't even engage in a fire mission without permission from the CIA and the pentagon.

Correct.

This is now and will forever be Mr. Bush’s war, and Mr. Bush will forever be solely responsible for its consequences and outcome.

Forced?

Pissing on dead combatants is beneath well trained, well disciplined US troops.

There was NO exit strategy for Iraq or Afghanistan..

If you want the RULES of the 6th century.. Read the Koran.

HT is not the issue.

The issue is that neo-con projection of hard power into the ME fails because we don't have the will as an American people to put half a million pairs of military boots on the ground in an operation run by the government only. Trying to outsource the war in an environment not conducive to winning the peace after combat was exacerbated by contracts to buddy corporations.

The failure was not left wing or right wing.

The failure has been from the beginning the cause of the neo-con hawks in both wings.

whitehall and his attitude and his incorrect beliefs about warfare in the 21st century highlights the failure inherent in neo-con thinking.

Harry Truman did not have congressional authority to order combat Troops to Korea. As a result the war war belonged to him. George Bush gave Saddam a year to comply with UN sanctions or risk military intervention. Democrats (same thing?) had a year to investigate all the avenues to avoid military conflict but 36% of the democrat party authorized the president to use combat Troops. It wasn't the GOP who bought a full page ad (discounted at $10k) in the NY Times calling the US commander of combat Troops "betray-us". It was the dirty tricks democrat party. Democrat senate majority leader Harry Reid should have been indicted for treason when he tried to impact the morale of the Troops when he pronounced "the war(in Iraq) is lost" just before the Troop surge. Cindy Sheehan's nut case anti-war radicals disappeared after Obama was elected. Add it all up and you get the typical democrat treason-for-votes attitude.

Yes we should, I have friends there now and I don't even know why they are there anymore.

Bush went into Afghanistan because OBL was there, he was responsible for the WTC attack, and the Taliban protected him. Obama tripled the number of troops in country and at that point it became his war.

"Forced" is what I meant. Marine Commandants serve at the pleasure of the president. Some are tough and some aren't. The current Commandant never commanded combat Troops. He was a pilot. Interesting that the powers that be decided not to prosecute after all.

Just as in Viet Nam, the Democrats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!

Semper Fi brother. LBJ set the rules so we could win every battle in Vietnam but still lose the war. Democrats tried to undermine the mission in Iraq and the senate majority leader should have been indicted for treason when he tried to impact the morale of the Troops when he said "the war is lost" just before the troop surge. Obama didn't want to fight. He couldn't even defend the Ambassador in Libya so he set the rules so Americans would be maimed and die for nothing.

About 36% of congressional democrats voted to authorize the US to enforce UN sanctions against Saddam. American Troops went farther, faster and took more real estate with less casualties than any other conflict in history but lefties hate victory. Democrats tried to undermine the mission with vicious propaganda like calling the US commander "betray-us" and democrat politicians tightened the screws in the Afghanistan mission so that US Troops would continue to be maimed and killed while the president spent his time on the golf course for six years.

y'all shouldn't be pointing fingers. we should just bring those troops home. the right or wrong of all of it got lost. who cares about the why, when, or how. for the troops, all that matters is the right now because there may not be a right tomorrow for those people.
