The problem is with how it is taught, and the fallacy that EVERY student needs to learn Shakespeare.

Shakespeare and Chaucer are both great. Chaucer especially is very funny.

There is something to be said for learning the things that have withstood the test of time. Shakespeare has been considered the greatest playwright of the English language for hundreds of years. You cannot consider yourself a literate English speaker unless you have at least read Shakespeare.
