Well, to be honest, I can't recall be taught Shakespeare at comprehensive/secondary school here in the UK. I imagine if you did English A Level, Shakespeare might be part of that, and I imagine you definitely learnt about him if you did an English degree. But I left in '85, so school is a blur, lol.

My advice to anyone about Shakespeare would be, definitely skip read his books if you're planning on going on a game show. Apart from that, I've never been in a situation where I needed to have known about his plays.

Here in the UK, there's just far too much history to learn, and Shakespeare is one of the many thousand subjects you could list. For example, if you visited one UK castle per day, it would take you 4 years to visit them all. Then you will have the history connected to each one. And tbh, I don't know if that includes the many Peel Towers.

When I've been to the States I've been asked about Sherlock Holmes and Shakespeare, and to be frank, my knowledge on both is a smidgen above zero.

Not at all. I happen to enjoy a good performance. We have a world-class Shakespeare theater here at Sand Harbor on Lake Tahoe.

We have had season tickets for decades. However, Shakespeare is useless for a scientist or a engineer. If they choose to take classes as electives, good for them.

But requiring them to take classes that won't benefit their majors is stupid, costly, and an example of the corruption in the education system.
