Should Big Pharma Ads Be Banned?

The purpose of the ads is to get patients and doctors aware of new innovations being cooked up in the labs of Eli Lilly.

The alternate , more traditional way, of pushing pills is to send pharm reps to doctors offices, give them free samples, buy them lunch, whatever.

How would you suggest pharm outfits let doctors know that there are new, often better , treatments for obesity or whatever?
Doctors get barraged with notifications about new drugs all of the time.

Government should take a hard look at the Ad. industry. The law requires the ad agencies to list the side effects of prescription drugs but they do it in such a way that nobody is aware of it.

I honestly never made this connection to how BP uses ad revenue. I know on Fox news when Ozempic was 1st being use main stream for weight loss all the medical pundits were against it and talked about the dangers of it being widely prescribed for weight loss. Then it seems 1 day they all flip and Ozempic was safe and not only for weight loss but a host of other things.
The issue with Ozempic and other meds is they were being prescribed for patients so much that it created a shortage for diabetic patients who really needed those medications. When the drug companies ramped up production, the problem was resolved.

From all forms of TV! If they can ban tobacco adds from TV, we shouldn't have to suffer through this pharma onslaught.

RFK Jr wants to ban them. We are one of two countries that allows it. The other (New Zealand) is much more regulated.

They should be limited to medical magazines.

Pharma ads are nothing more than leverage to keep the news media from running stories against their industry.

Basically, they pay the network so well that nothing negative is ever broadcasted about them. Some sourses claim that 80% of TV ad revenue comes from big pharma.

Before you start, I know.....1st Amendment concerns.
So explain how it's OK to ban certain adds like tobacco products but Big Pharma is a 1A poster child?

Reading this might cause:

Spontaneous Bowel evacuation, breast enlargement in men, swollen uvula, facial boils, unknown tongue fungus, sudden debilitating chronic headache, loss of eyesight, sudden aversion to politicians, and impacted bowl syndrome!
I think RFK Jr and you might be onto something. Most of the big pharma ads don't even make clear what the drug is supposed to be used for and half the ad is filled with all the terrible side effects that come with it. It seems obvious to me that they aren't effective to sell the drug so you may very well be right that the ads are a legal payoff to television and publications to discourage any serious research or negativity. And that is certainly not in the interests of the American consumer.

The only reason for those ads is to influence folks to pressure their doctors. It's bad enough that doctors are constantly bugged by these drug salespersons. I remember being in my former doctor's waiting room. They would just let in these salespersons as soon as they came in. I had to wait longer while they got ushered into the backroom to hit up the doctor.

Yeah and those videos always have fake happy looking people and bad music.

And you wonder what perks those salespeople gave the doctors so that they would be let in right away.

Banning ads for legal products is hi level logic fail.

The products we are discussing are medications that require a medical professional to prescribe. If one is not a doctor it would be illegal to obtain these products.

So? Legal ads for legal products.

I never understood the purpose of those ads

Only a doctor can prescribe those drugs and Big Pharm is already paying them off.

From my experience, any drug that has an ad on TV is very expensive
They want their jingle, sung by a dancing fat woman, reverberating in your brain.

Heck no they shouldn't be banned. If it weren't for those Cialis ads, a.......friend of mine wouldn't have been able to fix a particular problem!
