Biographical details:
According to ISIS propaganda, Baghdadi has a PhD in Islamic law from Baghdad University and served as an imam in several prominent mosques across Iraq. But it's more likely that the 43-year-old caliph has a humbler pedigree. Baghdadi grew up outside Baghdad in a family of preachers, and had little money. He went on to study at Baghdad Islamic University, but wasn't much of a student — he preferred to play soccer. After the U.S. invasion, Baghdadi played a minor role as a courier for Al Qaeda in Iraq. He was arrested by U.S. forces and held at Camp Bucca for nearly a year. There, he would meet more men like him: salafis and Baathist secularists who would usher him more deeply into the insurgency. By mid-2010, he was chosen by the Shura Council to lead the Islamic State of Iraq.
