Most of them had already learned that they had been freed. This was particular to Texas.

The anniversary of The Emancipation Proclamation would serve as a better holiday than the idiotic-sounding "Juneteenth".

The day doesn't matter. It is the celebration of freedom for those people unjustly held that matters. I can't find among my ancestors people who were held in bondage. Can you? We must recognize what the people have gone through so that it does not happen again.

I was born less than a decade after the nazi death camps were liberated. I am not Jewish, but I was educated in what is never to be done to a fellow human being.

I don't know what these people experienced emotionally when the cell doors opened. But I can think of the joy that these long-dead Americans felt.

That wouldn't be June 19th though. Slaves were freed once slave territory fell into Union hands beginning January 1, 1863.

Slavery ended with certitude with the ratification of the 13th Amendment. Ratified on December 6, 1865, proclaimed on December 18, 1865.

They didn't feel much joy. Mostly it was fear. That's how the former field slaves ended up being sharecroppers in the same fields they tilled as slaves. With somewhat less reward.
