I never was a big fan of bears. As far as I'm concerned they don't really contribute much to the life cycle because they don't remove enough downline prey to be missed if they suddenly disappeared. They're grouchy and dangerous and will very quickly kill any human they decide to focus on for whatever reason. The idiot naturalist Timothy Treadwell comes to mind.

I read the article and you'll have to forgive me but I'm having a hard time giving a shit. I guess they help keep the seal population down.... But probably not by too much.... They're terrible hunters by the way.

In the meantime I suppose there's an opening for a government-funded study on how to make the big white monsters regain their lost weight!

Well how will we know whether harbors get overrun with seal until it it is too late?

Orcas control the seal population....
But there are too many seals even now.

LOL

Longest-swimming polar bear lost less weight than …

We know that polar bears routinely fast during the summer and early fall whether on the sea ice or on land: they lose weight because they live off the excess fat they put on during the spring. It’s their Arctic survival mechanism and it’s precisely how it’s meant to work.

Andrew Derocher pointed out recently (2 November 2015) on Twitter that Western Hudson Bay polar bears lose about 1 kg per day during their onshore fast:
So all of this crying and wailing about skinny polar bears is nothing but bullshit.

As a human being wouldn’t it make more sense to educate myself, family and friends about the sanctity of human life? And voting for sanctity of life candidates?

We should be voting for the sanctity of our wallets ... did the OP check his source? ... does the OP really believe meteors bring vomiting pigs? ...

The National Enquirer by any other name still as silly? ... bad enough this is where you get your science news, but do you have to foist it upon us as well? ...

Skinny Polar bears is not thing?

Is that a trustworthy source? ... how are they defining "skinny" ... how do we know they weren't obese before ... why haven't they tried to publish in a reputable scientific journal? ...

C'mon ... even thesis mills are rejecting this? ... I'm asking you why you give this article any kind of credibility at all ... only a daytime soap opera digest would use this as filler ...

You may have noticed that I'm not a fan of the article. I've made fun of this stuff ever since it made an appearance however after having watched several specials on the subject I'm willing to admit that there may be some habitats that are causing polar bears food supply stress. The main point here is that I don't give a shit. In my opinion all bear species should be hunted to Extinction.... they don't contribute much of anything except danger to the environment.

Having said that your point is noted....
There's no question that everyone should form a vetting habit when it comes to sources.
I guess since it's this one is one of my pet peeves I posted it compulsively to make fun of it.

You should live in California ... some property owners will let you hunt deer as long as you take out as many bears ...

Bears are grouchy and dangerous.....
Most bear species are very unsuccessful hunters...
Fortunately for them they are also omnivores.

There's nothing cuddly about a polar bear or a brown bear or a black bear for that matter.
Hell even a panda bear can rip you to pieces....
They tend to be very shy and unaggressive unlike their cousins.

Polar bear skins specifically make excellent rugs.
They have an extremely thick black skin underneath that white fur that can be treated like leather. Processed correctly a polar bear rug can last 100 years.

That's about all they're good for as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe Churchill along the Hudson Bay would better suit you ... you may not be able to shoot dead any polar bear you want to ... but I'm sure you can shoot any polar bear you need to ... and you'll need to be shooting polar bears during migration season ... sell the rugs to rich Texas oilmen ...
