I believe that Prohibition taught us that government should not try to punish people for having bad habits.

I am old enough to remember when smoking cigarettes was commonplace.

Then we discovered that tobacco was not good for our health.

A massive educational campaign was started (along with a ban on cigarette advertisements), and cigarette use has dramatically declined.

If government is truly interested in helping people (and not just looking for a way to pry more money out of ordinary people), then government should use education in order to explain to people why drinking soda pop as if it were water is truly dangerous to one's health. Perhaps education could also persuade some people to think twice before they use recreational marijuana. I admit, however, that education does not seem to have done much to cut the use of alcohol. NEVERTHELESS, I think that education of the right sort can be helpful in helping us weak human beings to moderate some of our unhealthy habits.
