10cc ~ I'm Not In Love - YouTube
When they start saying "be poised and quiet", my buddy Clyde thought they were saying "requesting Clyde".
Acutally she's saying "be quiet - big boys don't cry".
Hard to see that tune in here; it's got quite a history. Eric Stewart brought it in as kind of a bossa nova, played it and his bandmates were unimpressed and moved on -- but then noticed that the studio staff kept singing the melody for "I'm not in Love" so decided to give it another look and a rearrangement.
All those lush voices that sound like a synthesizer or mellotron were actually done by singing and holding every note of the scale, one track at a time, onto 16 tracks and then cloned to 256 tracks, so that they constructed an instrument out of the mixer console by running the tape and opening selected tracks to create chords. That had never been done before (this was 1974). The result was so successful that it launched the band and got them a nice recording contract with a bigger company.
