THe idea of using fiction to discuss real issues in not really new. That the issues might be scientific in nature or might be based on what might be possible in the future is hardly funny.
Hard science fiction often has a weak plot and poor character development but when the author pulls it off it's great because it seems so much more authentic. Most of the stuff they call science fiction today is fantasy and horror, not sci-fi.

That's true. Arthur C Clarke, Robert L Forward, both scientists and excellent authors as well.

Most do.
Though you have to be careful the "insight" is not just your preconceived notions "finding" validation.
