A recent report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development found the city of San Diego and the surrounding county had the fourth-highest population of homeless people in the country – a crisis prompting city officials to take big, yet costly, steps to get the situation under control.

In one of the more dramatic moves by California communities grappling with a growing homeless population, the city has pursued the construction of massive taxpayer-funded tents, trailers and other facilities to house those otherwise living on the streets and in their cars.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, signed off last week on a City Council-approved $11 million contract to fund through June 2020 three such “bridge shelters” for the homeless and a facility for people to store their belongings. The contract also laid the groundwork for the construction of a fourth bridge shelter.

“We’re taking dramatic action to move homeless people off the streets and get them help,” Faulconer told Fox News. “Our strategy is to connect, support and shelter them.”

The plan includes safe parking zones for people living in their cars or RVs.

If you build it they will come ...

Yup. If you build a nice tent city homeless will stream into that city.

Hell look at the tenements in NY City. They were beautiful until the welfare crowd moved in. Now loads of them have been pulled down as unlivable.

Not a smart move at all.

i'm all for helping those out there who want to help themselves. but for the rest - what do you actually do to motivate someone to get off the streets and cover for their own needs?

San Diego, CA Warehouses for Sale - LoopNet.com

several warehouses out there for sale. spend millions on something you can fit to need and then fix the crisis or use part of this to rent out to businesses who need on-site help for manufacturing, assembly, or the like. give people a home and a job at the same time.

but setting up tent villages? another example of doing something w/o a long term plan.

Your the one who's talking about killing the poor. Not me.

They don't starve. They pan handle on every street corner and go to the shelters for food.

The only 3rd worlder I see is your stupid ass.

In Washington DC before I moved, during winter time outside the CNN HQ, around 30 homeless set up shop and CNN would provide them pup tents, because that was the humane thing to do, not assist the homeless by taking them into their building where there was heat and food.

Good its about time the US pays for its poor. All the while the rich live like kings and queens.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), who often rails against income inequality and calls on the wealthy to pay its "fair share" in taxes, took pains in late December to try to preserve tax breaks for two of her multi-million-dollar homes one last time before the new tax law kicked in.

Largely thanks to her husband Paul, a real-estate and venture-capital investor, Pelosi is the wealthiest woman in Congress with a net worth of more than $100 million and the seventh wealthiest member overall, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Those pup tents was probably donated to them, and they just could figure out away to dump them without getting fined. CNN, the Clinton News Network will not help those that are in need.
