Hello. I couldn't find a thread about this issue.
As we know, in Ukraine there was a "Orange Revolution" resulting Yushtchenko comeing to power.
Russia has the worldwide most Gas reserves in the world.
The EUs main supplier of Gas is after Norway Russia.
Russia does export around 100 Billion cubic meter of gas to EU. 80% of this export leads through Ukrainian soil and pipeplines.
With the "Orange Revolution" Ukraine has neared itself to the EU away from Russian influence. EU gave Ukraine "economy market" status and Yushchenko said his aim is to be EU member in the future.
Russia does withnatural reccources politics. For example Belarus pays for a cubic meter of gas 46 $. Armenia pays 50 $.
Germany pays around 220$.
Georgia paid 68 $. After Sakashvilli comeing to power via "Velvet Revolution" Georgia nw pays 180 $.
Ukraine paid so far 50 $. Kreml owned Gas-company Gazprom now wants 230$ from Ukraine. Ukarine can't pay this price. It is almost 5 times of the price than with former Pro-Kreml government in Kiev.
The new price is valid from 1-1-2006.
The last weeks over there is a rhetoric duel between Russia and Ukraine. Russia says: "When you don't pay the new price we will cut the supply of gas. You will only get Transit-fees for the Gas which goes through your soil"
Ukraine says: "Then We will cut 15 % of all Gas which leads through our territory. Even if it is for EU. We can not pay a price which is 5 times bigger than before. Additionally we will close or Sevastopol. Or demand a bigger price/fee for Sevastopol"...
Sevastopol is in Ukrainian territory on the black sea. But there lies the Russian military NAvy forthe Mid-Terrinian and the Black sea. On this port.
When Ukraine got independence, Russia and Ukraine agreed on a mutual "friendness-treaty" that Russia can use Sevastopol for a fix fee.
Now Russian Foreign MInister Iwanow says: "Sevastopol is written in the friendniess-treaty of our 2 countries. You can not change this expectng no Russian proper reaction to this"....
Gazprom announced now that it will send live via TV on 1-1-2006 for Russian TV-consumers how Ukrainian gas-supllies will be stopped.
It is leading to a conflict. Russia uses naturalreccources to harm anti-Kreml elements or recompence pro-Kreml governments in ex-Soviet states.
Look What Belarus and Armenia pay for GAs. And what Georgia and now Ukraine must pay. Allthough it will harm Ukrainian citizen and economy.
