The world is on the brink of a tremendous tragedy with the Russian Army planning to invade the country of Ukraine for Ukraine shows a lot of promise to grow into a prosperous and a model democratic country plus this will turn back the clock fifty years to when the world had to fear territorial expansionism by the Russian government. I fully understand how the U.S. government cannot send U.S. combat units into Ukraine to defend against the invasion because there is no policy justification for that move especially in light of how many of those soldiers would die or be wounded the Russian tank and troop carrier columns have such enormous firepower accompanying them the casualty rates amongst the Ukrainian and their allied forces positioned in front of the invading columns will be huge. The one thing I don't understand is why aren't the abundance of military experts in America talking about the issue of the use of America's air power to fight the injustice of this Russian invasion. I think it is important to have these public discussions because there is an epic lesson for the American people to learn here.

The Russian army will have "multiple" types of surface-to-air missile/weapons systems accompanying their invasion force to protect it against attacks by planes. The meaning of this technology of the Russian Army is that the U.S. air force could not do in Ukraine what it did in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria over the last twenty-five years where U.S. air power wiped out enemy ground forces. The truth of the matter is that if the U.S. and Russia fought a ground war the U.S. would lose a sky-high number of airplanes because of Russia's air force and it's surface to air missile technology is so good. These Russian invasion columns on Ukraine's border will have the S-400 SAM system (called the Triumph) which has various types of radar which can even pick-up stealth planes only at close range though (25 miles out) and it's launchers carry different types of missiles to target different types of planes, they will have the Pantsir S-1 SAM system which has medium to short missiles plus automatically operated cannons and they will have either the TOR system S-15 SAM system or the BUK S-17 SAM system that fire medium range missiles. The practical meaning of this is that these types of air defenses could take out America's work horse bomber the F-35 this plane is America's top of the line plane it has premier stealth design and technology.

What really need to take place in America and members of Congress should be explaining themselves and leading on this. Is that America has made a mistake on bomber plane procurement over the last twenty years. America's defense strategy should be to prepare to fight a superpower not these countries and groups with second rate militaries and the harsh reality is that Superpowers have state of the art air defense systems and the meaning of this is that if the United States has to go to war against such a country it will lose a lot of fighter planes and bombers to these systems. So America should stop with making its workhorse plane ones like the F-35 which has a price tag of $80 million a piece and is super high maintenance its like three to four times the cost in maintenance as the U.S. air force other major planes. Members of Congress need to explain why does America pay a big price tag for this "stealth" technology when it isn't fully stealthy to our enemies they can spot the stealth planes and have a decent shot at shooting it down. Wouldn't America be better served with having a bigger bomber than the F-35 with a more powerful engine increasing its speed, a stronger structure that makes it more durable and maneuverable and less costly.

I wish I had a dollar for every public commentator that said America has no reason to get involved militarily in this Ukrainian/Russian conflict. I will give every American three compelling reasons everybody got their pen ready prepared to take notes; these are the three reasons: your money, your income and your wealth! If Vladimir Putin invades Ukraine I am not talking about him taking a land bridge from the Donbas region to Crimea I am talking about him taking the eastern portion of the Ukraine like up to the Dnieper river or more (really hurting the people of Ukraine) something the world cannot let pass, if this occurs it will have a dramatic negative effect on the world economy. Those public commentators are right that the effect of a Russian invasion will be that the markets will drive the price of a barrel of oil to over $125 and natural gas to over $6.00 mm btu in America, this will drive inflation which will force the Federal Reserve Board hand and by March of next year America will see a Fed Funds rate 1.5 % higher than it is today this will push the equity markets down and America is a consumer based economy and interest rates affect business investment and hiring so like I said people's money, income and wealth will be significantly hurt with this Russian invasion.

If President Biden was a prudent leader he would find a way to significantly improve the Ukrainian people's hand in this conflict with Russia and give the Russian leader a compelling reason to pause. One has to give the Biden Administration their due though, in this conflict it was a very novel and clever strategy to continually report the Russian Army's movements and preparations for the invasion because it really takes Vladimir Putine off his game his MO is to get the other side to lower their guard and then he pounces his game plan was to get the world and especially the Ukrainian people believing the invasion is nonsense never going to happen and then he takes whatever he wants of Ukraine. The Biden administration and many other Nato Allies have done a highly commendable job of providing the Ukrainian people with the weapons to defend themselves. Sometimes circumstances call for extraordinary action on a President's part, this Ukranian matter is it. It seems to people that follow President Biden's comments fairly closely that he may be exaggerating a bit some aspects of this issue; he said this past week that if America gets militarily involved in Ukraine in this fight to stop Russia a World War will ensue. No President Biden if things turned into a World War that means China would get into the fight against the U.S. and its allies which means that China would get into a shooting war with its best customers which ain't going to happen President Xi Jinping isn't going to cut China's economic throat over Vladimir Putin's vision of Russia's place in World history as a supreme culture! Plus, Vladimir Putin doesn't have the depth of military assets and the industrial complex to fight a major war with America and her allies which would be a long war.

How does President Biden really improve the Ukrainian people's hands in this conflict? In the middle of the night President Biden directs Secretary Lloyd Austin to load seven of America's biggest cargo jets with Patriot missile batteries and the crews that operate them and fly them into Kyiv and place the batteries across the country seventy-five miles or more from the Ukranian/Russian border so the crews don't get captured during the Russian invasion. Once they are in place publicly announce it so Vladimir Putin and Russian parents of Soviet pilots know there will be a severe casualty price to pay for the invasion. If President Biden wants to morally justify militarily coming to the aid of the Ukrainians I am sure that comments made either by President Clinton or his staff in negotiating with the then Ukrainian government for them to relinquish the Soviet nuclear weapons they possessed at least implied that America would militarily come to their aid if Russia attacked them and tried to take their sovereign territory because common sense would indicate this had to be a concern for the Ukrainians. If Russia invades Ukraine and gets away with it this is such a disaster for world peace it is impossible to quantify. I think those commentators are right if this happens and Russia gets away with it China tries to take Taiwan very soon and then President Biden has a real crisis on his hands because he does not have the same out he had with Ukraine saying there is no legal obligation for the U.S. to get involved, it is a grey area legally and from a reputation standpoint America's prestige and trustworthiness will be on the line. A prudent President Biden if Russian tank columns cross the Ukrainian border would use America's air force to help repel the attack America couldn't offer close air support to Ukrainian troops because too many downed U.S. planes would result but distant releases of bombs by U.S. planes when the bombs are laser guided would overall degrade these attacking columns. America has planes specifically designed to take out mobile SAM sites if they were used upon a Russian invasion they would reduce the number of Russian SAM sites thereby helping the Ukrainian and U.S. air force pilots trying to stop those invading columns.

I am looking forward to Fuck Joe Biden getting his pee pee slammed by a Russian sledgehammer. President Putin has out maneuvered Biden on everything. Thereby proving that our chief Fuck isn't the only one with an oatmeal brain. His handlers have oatmeal brains too.

The truth of the matter is that if the U.S. and Russia fought a ground war the U.S. would lose a sky-high number of airplanes because of Russia's air force and it's surface to air missile technology is so good.

But there is something you are very obviously missing here.

The US started to learn, refine, and perfect its operations against SAM sites in the Korean War. And in every major conflict since then (other than Afghanistan) they have continued to refine their abilities in this area. With the equipment, aircraft, and tactics being refined more after each conflict.

This is actually an area that the Soviet Union - Russia has never had to do, as they have not been involved in a conflict with an enemy with such capabilities ever. And there is a huge difference between theoretical and real world experience.

Myself, I actually question how well the Russian Air Defense systems will work, for many reasons. They are putting a huge reliance on ground based systems with the idea of using them to gain air superiority. The US on the other hand tends to use them now more as area defense, and uses aircraft as the tool for air superiority. And the US has been improving their HARM systems for decades, as well as ECM and stealth. Combine all of that, and I think the Russian air defenses would actually be in for a lot of trouble. Especially when things like reload times come into play.

A well planned strike could see a large wave of NATO aircraft "tickling" their defenses and causing them to shoot off missiles, with more stealthy platforms with long range HARM missiles sit just out of range. And when they are bingo on missiles, they swoop in and take them out. This was known as "Wild Weasel", but today tends to be called SEAD. But the thing is, for them it is a completely untested and untried defense, as they have never had to defend against a technically advanced enemy that could do so against them.

So they use the old "quantity has a quality all its own", and literally flood their forward battle lines with a huge number of air defense systems. Which I expect when first faced with attacks will work nothing like they expect.

These Russian invasion columns on Ukraine's border will have the S-400 SAM system (called the Triumph) which has various types of radar which can even pick-up stealth planes only at close range though (25 miles out) and it's launchers carry different types of missiles to target different types of planes

Oh, and to touch on this as well.

Yes, a lot of RADAR can "pick up" stealth aircraft. However, what they generally can not do is lock on with enough of a signal to get a firing solution. In order to do so they generally have to go to maximum power and blast the region with enough EM to cook hotdogs half a mile away.

Which has its own risk, as that greatly extends the range they themselves are detected and located. This is largely the very idea of SEAD-Wild Weasel missions. Get something out in front at the edge of the detection envelope of the RADAR, then "tickle" it, trying to get them to expend missiles, as well as increase RADAR power. At the same time from another angle other aircraft sneak up with HARM (High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile) and then target the RADAR system itself.

And yes, there are many missiles that they can use, depending on the mission. The US PATRIOT system is the same way, we load them up with missiles to respond to the expected threats in the area. For the US, that is pretty much exclusively the PATRIOT system. And they operate with a decent selection of missiles.

The GEM+ is kind of a "one size fits all", as it can handle both aircraft and TBM threats. GEM-C is designed primarily to target "Air Breathing Threats" (jets and cruise missiles), while the GEM-T is designed primarily to target TBM threats (Terminal Ballistic Missile). Then finally there is the PAC-3, a kinetic kill missile that can work against aircraft or ballistic missiles.

This is nothing new, as the original GEM (which was an enhanced version of the original missile) was already entering service in 1990. In fact, we got to fire off a lot of GEM missiles when I was at Fort Bliss, as they were already reaching the end of their shelf life by 2007 so the decision was made to expend them in training rather than just destroy them.

But no, neither Russia or the US uses "different types of missiles to target different types of planes". They use different missiles to target different kinds of threats. And all airplanes and cruise missiles are targeted with the same missile. All you need is a missile good against ABT, and another good against TBM.

Tell us again how long and how you served in the military?

Oh, this forum is lousy with people who never served a day, yet are experts after reading a few web pages.

Myself, I mostly laugh at them. Especially when they try to talk about an area that I really do know well. I am largely an "informed dilettante" in many areas I admit, like in ship operations. Been on them, taken off from them in amphibs and helos, hated being supercargo locked in the hull during combat drills. But in others, I really am a "subject matter expert" as it was directly my job.

For that, first is Infantry and Security. My data is old, but not a lot has changed in the generalities in this area. A fire team is still a fire team, and they are not using exoskeletons and laser guns, so most of what I knew is still applicable.

Air Defense however was my bread and butter for years. Even sitting out in the Middle East for a year watching Iran. And operating in the Battalion CP gave me a real appreciation for how that works, as part of my job was dealing with the loadout and placement of all the launchers. And taking part in the 3-4 time a week theater wide "Air Battles", which incorporated not only us but the Air Force assets as well as any of the Navy that might be in the area.

Most people really have no idea how that would operate, and I mostly just laugh at the misconceptions they have.

That's because they care more about whether or not the Military planner's office has a few transgenders working there than they do about people with actual talent working there.

The US adapted to one of the most AAA, and SAM guarded areas = North Vietnam. And the Linebacker Operations were successful.
The US has plans and tactics to deal with SAMS, etc. Just because the Russians have SAMs, doesn't mean they are invulnerable.
The Iraqis had air defense in the Gulf War. The Arabs had Russian SAMs. etc during their wars-and the October War. The Israelis took a lot of air casualties, but they prevailed. The Israelis totally dominated in their wars vs Russian weapons. In their air war against the Syrian Russian planes, the Israelis dominated
. The NVA and the Arabs were using Russian systems and tactics

SAM's are nothing new. The V.C. used them effectively. The only "promise" the crooked little country showed was when it managed to lobby the Obama administration by awarding a million dollar no show job that V.P. Biden and his kid shared. The same lefties that supported Hanoi Jane when she sat on an anti-aircraft gun and pretended to shoot down American planes are in charge now and they label reasonable Americans "unpatriotic" when they don't support the Ukraine government.

To a degree, and only early on when much of their capabilities were still not known. But then the US countered with their own solution, "Wild Weasels".

"YGBSM" literally means "You Gotta Be Shitting Me", the words of a B-52 Electronics Warfare Specialist when he was told he would be flying in the backseat of an F-4 that was going out to hunt and destroy Vietnamese SAM sites by acting as bait to be shot at. But by the end of the war the lessons learned made those systems much less effective. And it is a technique the US still works on even to this day.

Putin calls Khinzal "an ideal weapon."

2022 marta 19 Moscow Times
'The Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse containing missiles and aviation ammunition in the village of Deliatyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk region....Vladimir Putin has termed the Kinzhal (Dagger) missile, "an ideal weapon" that flies at 10 times the speed of sound and can overcome air-defense systems.'

The US started losing huge numbers of B-52s in the last 2 weeks of the war in Vietnam, like a dozen or so.
Which made the US totally stop bombing North Vietnam completely.
They totally beat our counter measures.

Wrong.
The Arabs were never given any SAM systems that were newer than 30 years old.
When Assad wanted SAMs, Putin sent in Russians.
It would be useless to give modern SAMs to untrained people, and a security risk.

Operation Linebacker was a failure, not a success.
{...
Overall Air Force losses during Operation Linebacker II included fifteen B-52s, two F-4s, two F-111s, and one HH-53 search and rescue helicopter. Navy losses included two A-7s, two A-6s, one RA-5, and one F-4.
