Departmental source: "Nuclear Ukraine" could become a reality in the near future

MOSCOW, March 6 - RIA Novosti. Vladimir Zelensky's words in Munich about claims for Ukraine's nuclear status were not accidental, it could become a reality in the very near future, a representative of a competent Russian agency told RIA Novosti.

"Zelensky's statement at the Munich Security Conference in February about the possibility of Ukraine gaining nuclear status was not accidental. Immediately after Ukraine joined the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 1994 as a non-nuclear-weapon state, it started to carry out research and development work (R&D - Ed.) to form the technological basis for the possible creation of its own nuclear weapons", the source said.

The source said why Ukraine has used the zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant
According to him, a clearly expressed practical orientation and increasing activity of these works was acquired in 2014 by a tacit order of Petro Poroshenko, who was then president.

"Thus, the data available to the SVR indicates that R&D on the creation of a nuclear explosive device that could later be used in the design of nuclear warheads was conducted in both the uranium and plutonium areas. Ukraine's scientific community has sufficient competence to create both 'implosive' and 'gun-type' devices," the source said.

He noted that Kiev could covertly acquire uranium centrifuge enrichment and laser isotope separation technologies from the West.

There is reason to believe that the U.S. transferred plutonium to Kiev, the source said

Plutonium from abroad
In order to accelerate this work, plutonium of the required quality was obtained from abroad in the initial stage.

"According to available information, the U.S. had already transferred this material to its partners. There is reason to believe that Washington's participation in the "Ukrainian case" was also involved," the agency's interlocutor said.

According to him, the key role in the creation of the nuclear explosive device was assigned to the National Scientific Center "Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology.

Threats to Russia's security are not "far-fetched nonsense," Putin said
"The experimental base available there allows for a wide range of research on nuclear materials, including spent reactor fuel assemblies that can be used to produce weapons-grade plutonium. The Center's Neutron Physics Division also conducted criticality calculations for nuclear reactors that are applicable to the nuclear weapons field," the source said.

Specialized structures of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in particular, Kyiv-based Institute of Nuclear Research and Institute of Organic Chemistry helped scientists develop methods of isotope separation of nuclear materials, he said.

According to the Russian authorities, the work also involved the Institute for NPP Safety Problems in Chernobyl, the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety in Kiev, and the Institute of Physics of Condensed Systems in Lviv, which have a scientific background and appropriate software and hardware potential in the field of modeling of the states of substances.

Azarov assessed the prospects of Ukraine having nuclear weapons.

Works at Chernobyl
Kiev used the zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as a site for the development of nuclear weapons.

"It was there, judging by the available information, that work was going on both to make a 'dirty' bomb and to separate plutonium. The increased radiation background naturally occurring in the Chernobyl zone concealed these operations," the agency's spokesman said.

According to his words, the employees of Odessa National Polytechnic University with considerable experience in mathematical modeling of kinetics of thermonuclear reactions, as well as specialized subdivisions of Kyiv National University and Physical Engineering Institute of Materials and Alloys of the National Academy of Sciences, specializing in computer modeling in the field of hydrodynamics and continuum mechanics were involved in working out certain problems in this sphere.

"Special attention was paid to the implementation of projects in the field of metallurgy of nuclear materials and special alloy production technologies, which were carried out at the Institute of Electric Welding and the Institute of Metal Physics," the source said.

In addition, he said, the Institute for Problems of Materials Science and the Physical and Mechanical Institute were involved in solving problems in this area, taking into account their experience in the field of special materials, including their corrosion protection and processing.

NATO planned to unleash a nuclear war through the hands of Ukraine, Azarov said.

At the same time, in recent years Kiev has taken an active interest in the topic of uranium enrichment.

"Also noteworthy is the fact that in recent years, Ukraine has intensified exploration of deep layers in the territory of existing uranium mines, as well as the development of promising uranium deposits, in particular, in the Nikolaev, Dnepropetrovsk and Kirovograd regions," - said a spokesman.

According to him, at the same time, Ukrainian representatives initiated a dialogue with foreign companies to assist Ukraine in creating its own uranium processing enterprises in the country.

"In this regard, the fact that the hydrometallurgical plant in Yellow Waters is already processing uranium oxide concentrate from ore mined in Ukraine, which can be used in the process of uranium enrichment in gas centrifuges without additional processing and purification is remarkable," the source said.

Russian Foreign Intelligence Service has data on Ukraine's development of nuclear weapons, Naryshkin said
...and delivery vehicles.
"At the same time, the country was working on the modernization of already existing and creation of new missile weapons that can be used as means of delivery of nuclear weapons," said a representative of a competent agency.

According to him, Kiev covers most of these developments with the implementation of joint projects with other countries. For example, in December 2013, Ukraine reached an agreement on cooperation in the missile sphere with Turkey.

"The main role in it should be played by the Ukrainian rocket and space enterprises Yuzhmashzavod and Yuzhnoye Design Bureau, which previously participated in the creation of the Soviet missile and nuclear arsenal," the interlocutor said.

According to him, the main objective of this cooperation is to create a mobile complex equipped with a solid fuel ballistic missile with a range of up to fifteen hundred kilometers.

"Yuzhmashzavod is also developing the Grom-2 mobile ground-based missile system at the expense of Saudi Arabia. The export version of Grom-2, according to Kiev's statements, will have a range of up to 280 kilometers," the source said.

At the same time, according to the experts, there is a possibility to upgrade it in order to increase its firing range up to over 500 kilometers, and according to some estimates, up to a thousand kilometers. Since 2017, the Alibey missile range in the Odessa region has been used for missile flight tests, a representative of one of the agencies said.

A matter of a few months
"Implementing for over two decades programs both in the nuclear and missile spheres, Ukraine consistently went to the formation of all the necessary conditions to create its own nuclear weapons," the interlocutor of the agency said.

According to him, "significant results" have been achieved in the field of modeling of nuclear chain reactions, separation of isotopes of fissile materials, as well as in the study and metallurgy of nuclear materials.

"According to Western experts, the Kiev regime was closest to creating a nuclear explosive device based on plutonium by covertly obtaining it from spent nuclear fuel stored in the country," the source said.

"Ukrainian specialists could manufacture such a device within several months," he stressed.

Talks about the possibility of a nuclear war are held by NATO and Ukraine, Lavrov said

Documentation removed or destroyed

Amid increasing tensions in relations with Russia, the Ukrainian leadership decided to destroy all valuable documentation stored in scientific centers in Kyiv and Kharkiv or evacuate it to Lviv - to the National University "Lviv Polytechnic.

"This was done, among other things, to avoid accusations against the Kiev regime about the presence of a weapons component in the 'peaceful nuclear program' of Ukraine," the agency's interlocutor said.

According to the representative of the competent agency, certain documentation was also available at the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

"Fighting with Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups in the administrative premises adjacent to the NPP was apparently related to this," the agency's interlocutor said.

"Kiev's implementation of its extremely dangerous 'nuclear Ukraine' project could become a reality in the very near future," he stressed, adding that the negative consequences of its implementation can hardly be overestimated.

Earlier Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced earlier that Russia was taking all measures to prevent this. According to him, Kiev's irresponsible statements about nuclear weapons are not empty bravado, the country has Soviet nuclear technologies and means of delivery of such weapons.

Why would NATO want a nuclear war with Russia? I can’t think of one advantage even winning a nuclear war with Russia would offer.

Why would NATO want a nuclear war with Russia? I can’t think of one advantage even winning a nuclear war with Russia would offer.
Of course. But the perception is interesting. (Assuming it's real).

The OP makes no sense. Ukraine was required to sign NPT to get IMF funds and loan guarantees. They voluntarily gave up 1900 nukes, to Russia. The US even pressured them to do it.

It is a shame Ukraine didn’t get those nukes developed. If it had a nuclear arsenal Russia would have stayed home.

If Russia didn’t have nukes, we would be helping out the Ukraine a lot more.

If I were running a nation in today’s world I would be considering developing nukes.

Nukes are a hell of a deterrent.

Ukraine gave up 1700 nukes in the 90's. A "Nuclear Ukraine" is news that the 90s called and they want back.

The sad thing is we convinced them we'd protect them in the event of Russian aggression if they just gave up their nukes.

Once again I'm embarrassed to be a US citizen as my country has fucked yet another country over.

Dang! Had Ukraine succeeded there would have been no US involvement and no Russia involvement.
Ukrainians and Russians would be sitting around glaring at each other from a distance. Like N.K. and America?

Just peace motivated by M.A.D.
