First, we have no military option in Crimea. Second, MAD is still very much alive and well. In a nuclear exchange, there would be no Russia or USA in about 30 minutes.

The only option we have at present is to form a group of nations that impose sanctions on Russia that result in enough economic pain that the Russian people will see the Crimean gambit for the foolishness it truly is. There are enough nations liberated from Russia that fear a return of the Russian Empire that you will see them turning the the EU and US for help and economic alliance. That is not good for the economic prospects of Russia.
