Traditionally, the most ardent enemies of the Kurds are Turkish leaders. High-ranking officials of Ankara oppose all associations of the Kurdish people with amazing periodicity.
Yesterday the Russian and Turkish Presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Erdogan held talks for many hours. As expected, the main topic of their dialogue was the situation in Syria.
Obviously, the leaders of the two states discussed the Kurdish issue. Most likely, this aspect of the meeting was included in the list of topics that, as the press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov put it, ‘are not subject to disclosure and were the most difficult’.
The issues of interest to us were indirectly touched upon by Turkish foreign minister Cavusoglu, who announced on the eve of the meeting that the decision of Russia to convene a congress of Syrian parties and organizations in Sochi with the participation of the government of Bashar Assad and Kurdish formations was taken into consideration by the Turkish side. We believe that a political decision is no less important than a military struggle against terrorists, he added.
So, let's try to figure out the situation. At present, the issue of the expulsion of ISIS terrorists from Syria has already been resolved; the miserable remnants of al-Qaeda represented by Jabhat al-Nusra, Failaq al-Sham and other gangs have long been a threat to the national security of Syria.
However, at the moment the issue of the territorial structure of Syria remains unresolved. If we analyze the events of recent weeks, we can conclude that today all parties to the conflict are discussing the possibility of altering the constitution of the Arab Republic and granting the Kurdish people autonomy with the corresponding rights.
Successful implementation of this plan would undoubtedly be the best solution to all problems for the multinational Syrian people. Nevertheless, a number of states oppose this initiative.
Thus, representatives of the United States, unexpectedly for the world community, stated at a recent conference in Astana that they do not see the prospects for creating a Kurdish autonomy and advocate for the unity of Syria.
Traditionally, the most ardent enemies of the Kurds are Turkish leaders. High-ranking officials of Ankara oppose all associations of the Kurdish people with amazing periodicity. Moreover, these days Turkey is conducting a military campaign against the Syrian Kurdistan, using both its regular troops and the militants under its control. Russia aspires to complete the war in the Arab Republic within the shortest possible time and to reconcile the warring parties.
It is assumed that the Russian side carefully prepared the ground on the eve of the meeting. It was vital for Moscow to learn about all th of Kurdish people demands, and also to understand in which aspects they are ready to make concessions.
On November 2, one of the rounds of the negotiation process took place in a small village of Qamishli. Representatives of Syrian Democratic Forces and the tribal militia from the People's Self-Defense Forces (YPG) as well as the Russian military were among the declared parties. Despite the fact that the results of the talks were not announced, it can be assumed that in addition to the military operation in Deir ez-Zor, the issue of the post-war arrangement of Syria was also discussed at the meeting.
Well, in this situation we can come to an interesting and very unexpected conclusion. Russia, which supports the Baath Party and President Bashar Assad, is the only world power in the current geopolitical situation that not only supports peace in Syria, but also defends the rights of the Kurdish people.
