Whoever made it conventional wisdom for a NFL quarterback to NEVER take off with the ball needs to re-think this.
Consultants and coaches have pretty much programmed the Favres and the Romos of the world to NEVER take off. This is really stupid.
IF a QB is known to take off with it, defensive coordinators hesitate to blitz him, and the defensive line thinks twice before teeing off on him. This slows down the pressure, makes the passing game easier and keeps that element of danger always present in the minds of defenders, including most importantly, the secondary.
But when you are fully committed to standing back there, grilling hot dogs and holding that ball while the world is falling down around you, you get what we saw in New Orleans and Minnesota the last couple of weeks: Drew Bledsoe at QB for the Cowboys and Vikings. Clue to NFL quarterbacks: They are after you because you have the ball, dumbass. NOT because you have a hotter wife than they do, not because you make more money and get all the press, because of the fucking BALL. They want it or they want you to EAT it.
Now, of course I understand -- they tell them not to run in order to prevent injuries. But does it prevent injuries to get HIT 20 times like Favre and Romo did? Does it prevent injuries to take stupid sacks all damn day?
RUN
WITH
THE
GODDAMNED
BALL
EVERY
FUCKING
CHANCE
YOU
GET.
Coaches and consultants: Turn these guys LOOSE and let them take off when they feel the urge! Stop screwing with their heads. They have the "slide" and all kinds of rules in their favor once they take off.
And it WILL cause defenses to not be so aggressive. They WILL be playing that run, opening up the passing lanes and making your offense more unpredictable and therefore more productive -- and actually making the game safer for your quarterback.
And isn't that what you really want?
