Ellis' son Branford has confirmed his father died of complications from COVID-19.

It's very sad that Ellis Marsalis has died at the age of 85. That he died from complications of a virus reminds us that the elderly are especially vulnerable. Meanwhile, let's celebrate what he did while alive.
