NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Retail sales soared in March, the government said Wednesday, in the latest sign of improving consumer confidence.

The Commerce Department said total retail sales jumped 1.6% to $363.2 billion last month versus a revised 0.5% increase in February. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had anticipated that March sales would rise 1.2%.

March retail sales surged 7.6% compared to the same month in 2009.

WOW....it is the car industry that is carrying the increase, for the most part...

plus in goods, pre Easter sales fell in march this year....last year, the week before Easter fell in to the fiscal April sales....

retail could get killed this month, offsetting the gains made in march, from easter moving up a week.

i did not see an EVENT TO EVENT analysis....preEaster week ty vs preEaster week last year for an apples to apples comparison....?

Why are things always adjusted or revised? What are they adjusting and revising?

It would be nice to believe that the economy was on the path to recovery, but who is buying stuff when they don't have a job?

The 7.9 million home owners have not made a mortgage payment in many months but are still living in the home have an extra $8 Billion a month to spend shopping injecting that into consumer spending. This has been confirmed by Diana Olick & Erin Burnett of CNBC, Robert Schiller of Case Shiller & Mark Zandi of Moody's

Also gasoline prices have risen 35% since last year & that increase is counted in consumer spending.

Consumer spending only rose $5.8 Billion with the extra $8 Billion in consumer spending due to lack or mortgage payments. $2.2 Billion still evaporated.

Lol, true! The politicians in both parties have been great role models??  Glad the economy is looking up, but then it always does in the spring and when coming out of a recession which normally last from one and a half to two years. Now if jobs can be created for the twelve or thirteen million who are collecting unemployment ( welfare ) checks, we could be on a roll. Tax cuts for small business! :clap2: Banks loosening up money.

The economy is getting better.
Now, how could that be true when we are not even keeping up with the numbers of people who are entering the work force? Let's see we have about 180,000 entering the work force every month. Now, how many jobs are we creating?

Remember the government estimate of jobs created uses estimates like the Birth Death index and that is woefully out of date. It also estimates a set number of jobs per month as a given when they are no longer "given."

On top of that we are still seeing over two million a month filing for Unemployment Compensation.

To keep the Unemployment numbers at ridiculously low percentages, the DOL has dropped Millions and Millions from the work force. There are at least twenty million people that should be counted as being interested in working if only work was available close to where they live. Unfortunately there is no work close to where they live so the DOL does not bother to count them. They are on food stamps and welfare and getting by any way that is possible. Somehow they have been dropped from the American dream.
