Unpopular candidates DO increase their voter totals. Bush-43 wasn't really popular by 2004, but he STILL got more votes than he did in 2000. Same thing with Nixon in 1972. The reality is, incumbants get more votes regardless of their performance, because people generally tend to be afraid of the unknown.

The problem with Trump is that after turning the country into a dystopian nightmare, even more people were anxious to get rid of him.
