I remember I was young, white and living in Detroit. Not sure what I was thinking or why I decided to tell my mom some black boys tried to steal my bike. I think she could tell I was lying. I remember her saying "do you think we should call the police?"

I don't remember all the details but I remember the feeling of being too committed to stop the lie. Even when it's starting to become obvious that you are lying, it's so embarrassing to get caught lying. But you learn a valuable lesson. Reminds me of the feeling you get when a store security catches you shoplifting. GULP.
