Let's look at it: The 9/11 hikackers did what they did because they perceived that America, meaning its values and its ability to spread those values through its vast wealth and military power, is responsible for the low state of especially Arab and Muslim peoples in the world. America is the antithesis of Islam and the "dar el Salaam", world of peace that Islam represents. Thus they attacked the symbols of America: the WTC, the Pentagon,and maybe the White House.
Obama also sees America as the problem. He has consistently apologized for our behavior all over the world. He has criticized the Founders for not including "economic rights" meaning handouts, and income redistribution in the founding documents. Obama sees America, meaning its economic and political system, as the source of most oppression and misery in the world.
Thus he is trying to remake America to look more like the socialist democracies of Europe.
