REPORT: Seattle Restaurants Suffer Worse Job Loss Since The Great Recession

According to a report released Sunday by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the $15 minimum wage has caused Seattle restaurants to lose 1,000 jobs — the worst decline since the 2009 Great Recession.

“The loss of 1,000 restaurant jobs in May following the minimum wage increase in April was the largest one month job decline since a 1,300 drop in January 2009, again during the Great Recession,” AEI Scholar Mark J. Perry noted in the report.

The citywide minimum wage increase was passed in June of last year. The measure is designed to increase the city minimum wage gradually to $15 an hour by 2017. The first increase under the plan was to $11 an hour in April. According to the report, Seattle restaurants have already faced severe consequences as a result. In contrast, in the six years since the 2009 financial crisis, the industry has been recovering in areas without the $15 minimum wage.

“Restaurant employment nationally increased by 130,700 jobs (and by 1.2%) during that same period,” the report also noted. “Restaurant employment in Washington increased 3.2% and by 2,800 jobs.”

Supporters of the $15 minimum wage often argue it will help the poor and stimulate economic activity. Opponents, however, argue such policies will actually hurt the poor by limiting job opportunities. How little or how much of either outcome usually depends on the study. Nevertheless, even the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) agrees at least some job loss is expected.

all of it here:
Why Did Seattle Restaurants Lose 1 000 Jobs Report Blames The Minimum Wage The Daily Caller

I live in Seattle and one of my closest female friends manages a very popular pizza/pasta restaurant. Yes it is true that there is a lot of turnover recently in minimum wage employees. The above story omits something very important though. It seems to present a case that the restaurant owners and managers have had to fire over 1,000 employees over the new minimum wage. That is a big fat lie!

The TRUTH is that most of the turnover is because of the minimum wage employees ARE QUITTING in search of more suitable or desirable employment in this highly volatile employment market at this time. Now that the pay is more desirable in general people are exploring getting employment in areas they previously found interesting but not paying enough money.

It IS NOT TRUE that employers are firing minimum wage workers right and left over the minimum wage. I'm sure that the author of the piece the OP has cherry picked is well aware of the truth but as RWers are they have no problem lying to prove a point that on it's own does not exist supported by the facts.

I know of no pizza restaurant that has gone out of business just because they have to pay the higher minimum wage. One of my best friends drives pizza delivery and lately he has been busier than ever. People HAVE NOT stopped buying pizza in Seattle. It still takes the same amount of people to run the restaurants.

What HAS happened is that several thousand people have a lot more disposable income to spend in the city. In the last few years the min wage has gone from around $7 to $15. That's $8 X 40 X 52. That's several thousand people spending over $15,000 a year MORE in the city. That's 30-50 million more dollars in circulation a year more than a few years ago.

THAT IS THE TRUTH!

so you say they are going off to explore areas of more interesting....what kept them from changing before? Fast food work is hardly interesting, and wouldn't pay more than other jobs.,..so what you just described is silly....you are saying they didn't leave their fast food job because more interesting work didn't pay more...really? that is how you see it?

yeah...you don't get how that works do you........they just increased salary without an increase in customers....so how do they pay the increase? the price of food goes up, and they are letting people go and not hiring more people...so no one is putting money back in.

that magic money theory of left wing economics has no basis in reality...if it worked...why not give them each a million dollars a year...imagine how much mor they could spend if they had that much money.......you guys have no clue.

You were posting right wing reports of job losses before the increase even took effect. All signs point to Seattle doing very well.

I think they are doing well, but not for the people that the whole $15/h movement was designed to help. That's the thing, Seattle is being taken over by higher educated employees and large corporations. The $11/h min wage thing, hell even $15/h min wage, is going to be meaningless there because the vast majority of workers are going to be paid more than that based on their specialized skills. The min wage workers, even those who will eventually make $15/h are not going to be able to afford to live there regardless, they're already saying that - that's why Seattle ranks 40th for cost of living. Because rich people want rich shit, we pay more because we want good shit, good shit costs more, which means, ultimately, that that shit available isn't "feasible" for min wage workers to buy and they end up leaving.

Seattle basically fed the $15/h campers some happy soup to shut them up, because they knew, based on business friendly policies they put in place, that those low wage people were a) meaningless to the over all economy's long term health, and b) were already being pushed out of the city anyway. Market dictates that if McDonalds want's to stay open, then they are/were /already/ going to have to pay more, they have to pay enough to remain competitive for labor with the hauty tauty shops that are opening up to cater to the higher income bracket that's taking over Seattle. Seattle's $15/h living wage folks got played, and their happy about it, so everyone wins. ~shrug~

It was pointed out by Dan Proft here in Chicago...that when you raise taxes and fees and drive out the middle class, the only ones who can live in these cities are the extremely rich and the poor. The rich can afford to, and the poor get welfare but the middle class has to leave...then you have a violent, underclass part of the city, and the rich have good neighborhoods protected by plenty of police....so goes Seattle...

I'm not sure I agree with you on that as a whole, I mean yes and no... Welfare's nice and all, but it doesn't usually overcome the increased cost of living. I mean I suppose for 'some' poor sure, but not all, and I'd say a lot /less/ than in a not well off city. You get your section 8 allotment, so the poor move in there and eek out a survival, but all the ones who can't get into sec 8 can't afford a place to live so they either leave or end up homeless in the streets and (well at least in Alaska often end up dying to the weather.) Middle class in Seattle would be what making $18-20/h ish? Figure they could make it, just live like "poor" folks in other cities right? So I guess what I'm thinking is all three are still there, just the "middle class" is now poor and the poor are now destitute. I guess it kind of equates to the same thing in the end though...

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Yes I do. I have several friends in the restaurant business. The motel I work at surrounds a very popular North Seattle restaurant. I've been here at this location for over 5 years. You really have no idea what YOU are talking about. In fact you would be hard pressed to find anyone on this or any message board that has more working knowledge about the Seattle restaurant business. Don't come around here just flapping your gums Sparky.

funny nobody ever really delved into what the avg waitress makes....... especially at the finer dining establishments.......bet they get screwed by the deal thats supposed to save em

you make two and change an hour... get no paid sick time... and sometimes have to share tips with busboys, etc.

As was pointed out, job loss is the problem....letting people go, cutting hours or just not hiring people...then you will see places closing...or not opening at all

But, the rich will have their fancy restaurants, because those places, will survive.

So far I have not seen a restaurant that closes because of this MW increase.
Why don't you drive around Seattle and see how many restaurants under construction.

but that would wreck the o/p's lunacy.

I waited tables and tended bar for a few years and I averaged well over even after tipping out the bus boys and bar backs.

During the holidays the money was even better.

I'm sure the same applies today.

so you say they are going off to explore areas of more interesting....what kept them from changing before? Fast food work is hardly interesting, and wouldn't pay more than other jobs.,..so what you just described is silly....you are saying they didn't leave their fast food job because more interesting work didn't pay more...really? that is how you see it?

Fast food service is just a fill in vocation while a person is in transition to better employment. There are hundreds of jobs that provide a living wage starting point now. People are re accessing where they might want to venture as a vocation. It is very exciting to have so many viable options that will actually pay the rent. A lot of people are starting to look at jobs that they used to not consider because the pay didn't justify the situation. BUT back to the OP. False! There is a big difference in the concept of "turnover" between getting fired and quitting to find something more appealing to do. If you dig past the inflammatory headline you may be surprised to discover that the same "facts" mean something entirely different than the conclusion cherry picked by the OP.

So you have no facts just one manager and your opinion.

So lets look at the result of this minimum wage increase. Over a THOUSAND restaurant employees lost their jobs in a single month (with even more to come next month), and since restaurants are now understaffed, it will take forever for your table to be served food.

Who are the winners in this?

The workers who can finally survive?

But since this is the Daily Caller and the American Enterprise Institute, I am not surprised by the spin. Many restaurants are doing just fine.

In fact, they ignored the job gains in July. Typical conservative distortion
