Rep. John J. Duncan, Jr., in a speech Wednesday on the House of Representatives floor, quoted several prominent conservatives to help make the case that “there has been nothing conservative about our policy of permanent, forever, endless war in the Middle East.” In the speech, Duncan quotes, in turn, thought-provoking comments from Thomas Sowell, David Keene, Jon Utley, Peggy Noonan, and William F. Buckley, Jr.

I'm afraid there is no possibility of a good outcome in the Middle East for decades to come, whether we intervene or don't intervene, and we can only make things worse for ourselves by intervening.

It is going to be an Arab bloodbath. There is no avoiding it. This is a transitional period from barbarism to democracy.

It is like a terminal cancer patient. At some point you have to stop torturing the poor creature with ineffective treatment, and pray.

You mean conservatives finally got it????\
Hooray!
If only they bothered to study the region BEFORE we invaded, they would have known. Obama knew.
You can't insert yourself into a religious war in a country being held together by guns and intimidation. You become the target. The Middle East isn't the deep south, it's worse.

It's time to truly define what a 'Conservative' is. Because the definition certainly isn't clear at this point.

What is a Conservative?
Conservatism as a political and social philosophy promotes retaining traditional social institutions in the context of the culture and civilization. Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others, called reactionaries, oppose modernism and seek a return to "the way things were".[1][2] The first established use of the term in a political context originated with François-René de Chateaubriand in 1818,[3] during the period of Bourbon restoration that sought to roll back the policies of the French Revolution. The term, historically associated with right-wing politics, has since been used to describe a wide range of views. There is no single set of policies that are universally regarded as conservative, because the meaning of conservatism depends on what is considered traditional in a given place and time. Thus conservatives from different parts of the world—each upholding their respective traditions—may disagree on a wide range of issues. Edmund Burke, an 18th-century politician who opposed the French Revolution but supported the American Revolution, is credited as one of the main theorists of conservatism in Great Britain in the 1790s.[4] According to Quintin Hogg, the chairman of the British Conservative Party in 1959, "Conservatism is not so much a philosophy as an attitude, a constant force, performing a timeless function in the development of a free society, and corresponding to a deep and permanent requirement of human nature itself."[5]

want fries with that?

Pretty good analogy. To turn inward and ignore the region isn't really an option because of the (negative) effect it will have on our economy and ultimately our security but we've seen what getting over involved has done as well. It's like this continual push-pull routine we do with the region that will never end.

Pottery Barn rules.

Sadly, Americans only know war. When's the last time their Government wasn't somewhere around the world bombing & killing? Can anyone remember that time?

Not trying to deflect from the question but has there ever been a time in mankind that people haven't been at war or fighting with each other?

We can change that. Americans need to demand an end to this Permanent War.

I'm not against what you're saying and I hate being so cynical but to be a global leader like we are and without the ability to control the actions of others I don't know how we do that.

The People will have to demand it. The powers-that-be will continue the Forever War if they don't.

I won't disagree with you. But let's say we completely pull out of the middle east. Price of oil goes haywire and f's up our economy. How do you think Americans will react? And if the Middle East goes more nuclear and a nuke gets in the wrong hands? I don't see Americans sitting back saying that's ok.

It used to mean a thoughtful person who felt we should go slow. Now it's some crazy, anti science and anti education, heartless right winger who hates minorities.
