Probably means, the story is over two years old, Biden and his anti-assault weapon (misnomer for AR-15) ban support is out of office, and the story is old news. He just did not look or took somebody else's word for his OP stance. It probably seemed like good political fodder, whether true or not.
And they wanted to confirm the shooter was a Trump supporter based solely on him being a registered Republican in a closed primary state and overlooking his alignment and support of ActBlue.

None of that would or should matter if the argument for gun control [to ban guns] wasn't unconstitutional, the fact that it is obviously unconstitutional is the reason it takes something like an assassination attempt to give white liberals [like the congressman and media] the cover they need, once the episode starts to wane so does the call for gun control as their cover is being removed.
