Senator Lott Steps Down As Majority Leader

At the Thurmond birthday party, Lott said: “I want to say this about my state. When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years either.”

Thurmond ran for the presidency in 1948 as a Dixiecrat at the time, on a largely segregationist platform.

The remarks drew sharp criticism from African American leaders and Democrats who were soon followed by conservatives concerned that the uproar over Lott’s inferred endorsement of segregationist policies of the past would detract from the GOP agenda.

It wasn't so long ago that saying something like that had consequences. Largely because the objections to what he said were also coming from Repubs. As you may recall, Nixon only resigned when he learned members of the GOP were going to vote for his impeachment.

These days, a presidential candidate can brag on tape about grabbing women's vaginas, promise to seek retribution against political opponents, and orchestrate an illegal scheme to keep himself in power, all without consequence. And pretend to perform fellatio on a microphone.

Lott was guilty of stroking a dying old man's ego.

nothing more.

Media blew it out of context

Thank goodness Thurmond left the demklan party

Remember when current demklan president Joey Xiden fought to stop enforcement of brown v board of education? Bragged about working with Eastland? And gave the eulogy to a klansman?

I do

He could have gotten away with it if he had made the remark privately. But the Repubs of the day actually cared about the appearance of making racist comments because it may have had repercussions in the voting booth.

They have no such concerns any longer.

LBJ was correct when he said, 'We may have lost the South for a generation," after signing the Civil Rights Act. The type of racist who voted for Thurmond are Repubs now. It's why trump carried the South.

No, the racist lost…LBJ knew that when he signed the civil rights act and While xiden’s mentors like Eastland remained in power, the demklan couldn’t maintain it for ever

I should correct myself. LBJ was in error. The South was lost for more than a generation when he signed the CRA.

And why is this even relevant today? :dunno:

Trump ate into the black and Hispanic vote enough to matter.
I heard that Trump got about 80% of the black vote. when's the last time that happened?

Although Trump didn’t win a majority of either group, he won support from about 13% of Black voters nationally and 45% of Latino voters, according to CNN exit polls. In the 2020 election, Trump won just 8% of Black voters and 32% of Latinos. -USA Today

He killed it with black men getting 20%.

The majority of voting Americans have spoken. The left including the MSM have been lying about Trump ever since he started running for president in 2015. Most voting Americans know it's either lies or something blown way out of proportion or out of context.

Repubs holding on tightly to the trump train need not concern themselves any longer. Their constituents are fine with him saying batshyte crazy things like.......... “They take your kid. There are some places, your boy leaves for school, comes back a girl, OK, without parental consent.”

No need to. He's been quite open about his enthusiasm for sexual assault, his admiration for despotic governance, his embrace of fascist ideas, and his love for the uneducated.

got my numbers backwards, I meant 20%

heard it while laughing at the Views response to the election
Early exit polls from The Washington Post show that 78% of Black men voted for Kamala Harris. The vice president’s numbers were just one point under those who voted for Joe Biden in 2020.
According to Washington Post exit polls, Black women overwhelmingly voted for Harris, with 92% voting for her — even higher than the number of Black women who voted for Biden in 2020.

I wonder if you'd mind answering the implied question I asked. What has changed that allows trump to say atrocious things without consequence?

when you determine that, let me know.

I've never been able to stand the man, much less vote for him

agreed, once people were free from the oppression of the demklan they never looked back
