Taken from their debut album, the carpenter in this case is referring to Jesus.



Also seems to have religious imagery in the song. And isn't Gethesmane the place where Jesus was arrested the night before he was crucified?
 
XTC is one of my all time faves.

I was lucky enough to see them back in, like, 1978 0r maybe 79 in San Francisco right beore Andy Partridge developed stage fright and they stopped touring.
Yeah I heard that about them. Weird. They had a couple pretty good tunes.
