1. Today, in my email, a 'trivia' question:
What is the only Best Picture Oscar winner without any female speaking roles?
They gave possible answers:
Ben Hur
Midnight Cowboy
All The King's Men
Lawrence of Arabia
Got it right? Me, too.
2. " Lawrence of Arabia is a 1962 British epic historical drama film based on the life of T. E. Lawrence. Despite running nearly four hours long, Lawrence of Arabia has no female characters with speaking roles. The closest we get are a few women in the droves of extras in some of the film’s biggest scenes, but none are focused on beyond being part of the rabble. Lawrence of Arabia was nominated for ten Oscars at the 35th Academy Awards in 1963; it won seven, including Best Picture. In the years since, it has been recognized as one of the greatest and most influential films in the history of cinema."

And made me wonder if it was so due to the culture (religion) being pictured.
3. I recall this, from Chesler's experience:
4. Chesler is an expert on all things Muslim....as she has lived the experiences: "...she met Ali, a Westernized Muslim man from Afghanistan, the son of devout Muslim parents. They married in a civil ceremony in 1961 in New York State and settled in Kabul, in the large, polygamous household of her father-in-law. ... on arrival in Afghanistan.... authorities forced her to surrender her U.S. passport, and she ended up a virtual prisoner in her in-laws' house. Chesler describes this as how foreign wives were treated.[5] This phenomenon has been documented by others."
Ibid.
Chesler is one more recovering Liberal who was strong enough to have learned from her experiences in life.
5. In Afghanistan, she was silenced by the Muslim culture, and subject to 'purda'...
"Purdah, ... practice that was inaugurated by Muslims ... involves the seclusion of women from public observation by means of concealing clothing (including the veil) and by the use of high-walled enclosures, screens, and curtains within the home."

Purdah is solitary confinement.....for life.
