Not TRUE!
It can be tough telling fact from fiction these days—even when the facts are right in front of you. Case in point: the MTV death rumors. Millions of people believed the iconic cable network had gone off the air, including Pauly Shore, a former MTV host. But it didn’t. This was easily verifiable information that few bothered to check. In a column today, Esquire editor-at-large Dave Holmes, a former MTV veejay, explains how this fake narrative took root and issues a dire warning about our future.
MTV is not off the air in the USA.
There was a massive wave of viral social media posts on New Year's Eve (December 31, 2025) claiming MTV had shut down, but this was a case of "right news, wrong location."
Here is the breakdown of what actually happened and what the current status is:
1. What actually shut down?
On December 31, 2025, Paramount (MTV's parent company) shut down several
international music-only channels. These included:
- MTV Music
- MTV 80s / MTV 90s
- Club MTV
- MTV Live
These channels went dark in the
UK, Ireland, France, Australia, and Brazil, among other regions. In a poetic move, the very last song played on those channels was
"Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles—the same video that launched MTV in 1981.
2. The Status of MTV in the USA
The
main MTV flagship channel in the United States remains active on cable and satellite.
- Programming: It continues to air its usual lineup of reality TV and entertainment, such as The Challenge, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and near-constant marathons of Ridiculousness.
- US Sister Channels: Smaller US-based channels like MTV2 and MTV Classic (which still plays music videos) are also still broadcasting as of January 2026.
3. Why the confusion?
The confusion stemmed from the "Video Killed the Radio Star" finale going viral. Many Americans saw the clip of the channel signing off and assumed it applied to the domestic US network. In reality, the shutdown was part of a cost-cutting measure following the merger between Paramount and Skydance earlier in 2025, specifically targeting international linear channels where viewers have largely moved to streaming.
