  • Prominent supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin are using increasingly "genocidal rhetoric" when discussing and demonizing Ukraine, analysts note.
  • One commentator called for the "liquidation" of the Ukrainian state.
  • Ultra-nationalists have come to the fore in Russia particularly since the outbreak of war, continuously pushing the Kremlin to take a harder line with Kyiv.
Prominent supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin are using increasingly "genocidal rhetoric" when discussing and demonizing Ukrainians, analysts note, with some pro-war commentators cheering the concept of the "liquidation" of the modern state of Ukraine.

Ultranationalists have come to the fore in Russia particularly since the Feb. 24 invasion, continuously pushing the Kremlin to take a harder line with Ukraine and overtly critical of Moscow's military leadership following a series of withdrawals or defeats during the war.

Well-known commentators, ranging from military bloggers and journalists to politicians and officials, belonging to a nationalist faction in Russian politics have repeatedly called for Russia to adopt a more merciless approach to Ukraine, with some promoting the use of nuclear weapons and others advocating its complete annihilation.

Cockroaches' and 'pigs'

One of the most closely followed pro-Kremlin blogs belongs to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev who has over 900,000 followers on Telegram and is one of the staunchest supporters of the war and most vociferous and vicious critics of Ukraine.

The rhetoric he uses to characterize Ukraine and Ukrainians has also become increasingly dehumanizing; this week he characterized officials within Kyiv's government as "cockroaches" (because they wanted to retake Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014) while he used the term "grunting pigs" earlier in November.

Shades of Nazo Germany.

Biden calls his opponents semi-fascists.

It's just what despots do as they prepare to exterminate their political opponents.

OK this report basically gives the reason for antipathy towards Ukranians

Moscow official has rejected Ukraine's right to exist in what has been described as the latest piece of "openly genocidal rhetoric" by a Russian politician.

Andrey Medvedev, deputy chairman of Moscow's city parliament and a journalist, told his 150,000 followers on Telegram that in Ukraine "Russophobia has been elevated to the rank of national policy" and Kyiv "will never stop in its desire to kill us."

........................

He added: "The Ukrainian army is shooting at the peaceful cities of Donbass, because ideologically they perceive the inhabitants of these cities as something like cockroaches," he said. "All this can be stopped only through the liquidation of Ukrainian statehood in its current form."

You can read the rest at the link. This is pretty much how people act when they are at war and particularly when they are at war with people they thought they knew and were their friends.

I guess it is a difference from when Russians were apparently not motivated to fight. Let's hope they get talking soon and find compromises they can both live with.

What Russia is doing is targeting the civilian population so that they pressure the ukrainian government to accept their demands.

The drama queens shouting genocide can wake me up when 2, 3 or 5 million ukrainians have been killed by cold and starvation.

When it's politically profitable for the West even a duck hunt qualifies as genocide.

Now let's pretend we're talking Americans here. Are these numbers and terms still acceptable to you?

Not acceptable... these are the numbers that in a population of 42 million people would (broadly, vaguely) differentiate a war tactic from a consistent, recurrent pattern of trying to erradicate a substantial part of an ethnic group, aka, genocide.

For the record, what NATO did in Serbia in 1999, destroying bridges, factories, radio and tv stations, the power grid was not genocide either. It was just the same tactics of forcing the civilian population to apply pressure on their government.

K, just checking.

So what more do you need other than reports?
I have no idea. So far, I don't believe any of it. I have known Ukrainians. A businessass
Associate of mine is Ukrainian. I have known Crimeans. Very little of what's in the reports squares with what I already know.

I guess it is pretty natural for Russians to want to commit genocide against Ukrainians since they did it before and it is a crime in Russia to criticize that heinous act, and Russia does not recognize civilians as protected people in war since 2019, but among civilized people genocide is kind of big deal.

There are no compromises both can live with. Putin and the other ultra-nationalists have shown a perfect disregard for laws and treaties, so it would make no sense for Ukraine to sign another treaty with Russia until the ultra-nationalists are out of power.

The reason we see so many Russians in leadership positions calling for a genocide is that they finally realize they cannot win the war on the battlefield and so Russia has resorted to terror tactics, attacking civilians, to try to
try to force Ukraine to surrender, but this will be a war of attrition and Russia will never recover from it.

It's not natural, they were groomed for it by TV shows.

Stalin wasn't particularly popular 20 years ago except among a few fanatical Communists, now it's official state propaganda.
