Since he originally ran for president in 2016, Trump made it plainly clear that he did NOT want to be a war time president and wanted to "try" to end wars not get us into waging them. He has no problem with providing weaponry (for a price), but doesn't want to send our troops into another conflict. In his first and now second term, he has made successful peace and trade deals.
He was optimistic about negotiating with Putin, but not every deal can be worked out if you have one side that is intractable and as I said, he's not about to send in our troops to Ukraine. We are always being sucked into one war or another and it has to end.
