It makes for nice headlines, but this has everything to do with a new administration coming in.
I'm not sure if this reflects well or not on Trump, it depends on how well he trusts Putin and believes he will change his ways. Bush, Obama and Clintons red reset button all failed. Russia is now more influential in the Middle East since they attacked Afghanistan in the early 80's, and that was a failed endeavour. Putin should never be under estimated, he has proven this time and time again. You can type those words up and pin them up on your wall, at some point, America will have more issues with Russia beyond this, it's inevitable.
