New York Governor Kathy Hochul is pumping the brakes on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's campaign promise to make city buses free.

On Monday, the governor said she is not ready to move forward with free buses, preferring to subsidize fares only for low-income riders.

"I cannot set forth a plan right now that takes money out of a system that relies on the fares of the buses and the subways," she said.

What will be the next Mamdani promise to fall apart? A government run grocery store may happen, not too sure about its sustainability though.

Free child care will also depend on the willingness of child care providers to accept whatever the government decides to pay. That sort of situation either ends badly or results in much higher costs of child care for whoever pays it.
