My wife’s family is Puerto Rican and I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the island several times over the last decade. The people of Puerto Rico are amazing so far as I’m concerned… warm, outgoing, inviting, tremendous cooks with a vibrant culture unlike any other I’ve ever experienced.

Having said that, the residents of the island seem to be their own worst enemies when it comes to any level of political and economic progress. The oldest generations want independence. The middle generations want to retain the status quo and the youngest generations seem to be more eager for the perceived benefits of statehood from what I’m told and what I’ve seen.

unfortunately until and unless the island’s residents can come together and decide they want to progress to better things, they’re likely to be caught in this limbo for the foreseeable future.
