Is Puerto Rico About to Become the 51st State

11/8/12
By Daniel Greenfield

Once the euphoria fades, more of the media will turn to pushing Puerto Rican statehood after a non-binding referendum where Puerto Ricans sorta voted for statehood… but not really.

Why all the caveats?

1. The only reason that statehood even pulled off a slim majority is because the economy has hit Puerto Rico hard and they’re looking for more money.

Can you imagine the amount of money that will have to be poured into Puerto Rico to get it's infrastructure up to current Federal standards? It'll make the $800 Billion Porkulus bill look like pocket change.

You mean the infrastructure that is doing better than many of the states?

Please, do go on. I do so love ignorance as a form of entertainment.

How does that differ from every other state that was added after the 13 original?

And what is your cite for the cost?

They have roads, you know. And running water. And even electricity and cell phones and disco clubs!

I guess you guys didn't know Puerto Rico already receives lots of "free stuff" (Medicaid, food stamps, etc.) without the hassle of paying federal personal income taxes.

Statehood would change that.

Well, Puerto Rico maintains a AAA rating on its credit, and if it was a state it would be about 15th for fiscal policy.

So no, very little, if any money, would have to be pushed into its infrastructure. It actually does quite well on its own. I think it would actually HURT them to become a state.

LOL,
I'm sure that's the mindset that some of these folks have.

No need to worry, PR won't vote to become a state, they'll have to give up their olympic teams and that's a road too far. As previously stated they do get all the free sutff without paying federal income taxes. Companies are given huge incentives to locate there so they have the best of both worlds, all the goodies without the taxes.
