We have always had non profit health insurance companies in the US and their rates for the same coverage are on average the same as the rates for for profit health insurance companies, so there is no reason to assume a public plan will produce more savings than other non profits have been able to do. A public plan that does not receive taxpayer subsidies will have to charge what for profit and non profit private insurance companies charge or go broke.

An insurance policy is a legal contract and insurance companies do not drop you because you get sick. If you get sick and lose your insurance for some other reason, you will have a hard time finding new insurance, and that is an issue that needs study, but it is untrue that your insurance company will drop you because you got sick.

It is also untrue that public plans are "kinder" than private plans. As long as your premiums are paid, your private insurance company will pay for covered services, and as long as you retain your eligibility Medicaid will pay for covered services, but if you are on Medicaid and get a part time job that raises your monthly income a few dollars over the eligibility limit, Medicaid will drop you like a hot potato even if your life depends on services they have been providing.

Yeah, I saw the Cinery advertisement while watching O'Reilly (out of my daily morbid curiosity). And I did wonder how this could be possible. $6 dollars a day. $6, will get you maybe an aspirin in a hospital. So for $186 a month, if you factor in the months that have 31 days. That will get you about 3 Dr. visits. That will pay for him or her to assess you. And that's just about it. That doesn't include lab tests, medications, radiology...you know, if you have been unable to move your bowels for a month, bloody urine, vomiting and double vision.....all those things that will require radiology or some kind of invasive procedure to diagnose.

So if your income is more than $8.00/hour, you're SOL. You make too much money to qualify for medicaid. You might get private insurance for a couple of minutes until you are diagnosed with a brain tumor, and your new insurance company finds out that you sought treatment for the vomiting, double vision, hallucinations, new-onset seizures, and so on. They will not be making a profit off you, so you're "outta there".

You do realize that medicare and medicaid is paid for by everybody with a job, yet not everybody with a job benefits from it. In fact, most people with a job get nothing from medicare and medicaid.
Then, there is the SCHIP program, mostly financed by taxing tobacco products (can I call you a child-hating abomination of an asshole if you don't contribute to SCHIP by smoking?).

However, if the health industry doesn't make profit then they have no incentive to make new drugs, new diagnostics, new treatments, or anything related to reasearch. Why sink billions into researching cures for sickness if you cant make a buck doing it....you have to know that in the real world thats how things work.
