The House rejected President-elect Donald Trump's new plan Thursday to fund federal operations and suspend the debt ceiling a day before a government shutdown, as Democrats refused to accommodate his sudden demands and the quick fix cobbled together by Republican leaders.

In a hastily convened evening vote punctuated by angry outbursts over the self-made crisis, the lawmakers failed to reach the two-thirds threshold needed for passage — but House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared determined to try again before Friday's midnight deadline.

“We're going to do the right thing here,” Johnson said ahead of the vote. But he didn't even get a majority, with the bill failing 174-235.

The outcome proved a massive setback for Trump and his billionaire ally, Elon Musk, who rampaged against Johnson's bipartisan compromise, which Republicans and Democrats had reached earlier to prevent a Christmastime government shutdown.

It provides an preview of the turbulence ahead when Trump returns to the White House with Republican control of the House and Senate. During his first term, Trump led Republicans into the longest government shutdown in history during the 2018 Christmas season, and interrupted the holidays in 2020 by tanking a bipartisan COVID-relief bill and forcing a do-over.

Republicans shutting down the government, and Trump failing.

Just like the first time.

312-226....the Landslide got you down??

The notion of having to constantly raise the debt ceiling and the continuing need for a CR every three months is the glaring example of a failed government.
Shut the fucker down.
Grandma will still get her SS, main government functions will still operate.

Far past time for these idiots to cut spending.

I thought Joe and Jill were the president and first lady. How are they getting pushed aside by civilians who arent even in office yet? :cuckoo:

This is the phenomenon I noted as far back as the 2020 campaign season. Elections don't mean anything to democrats when they are looking for a Republican to blame.

The Dems take punitive measures like blocking access to parks and monuments and other theater acts.

What I want is for them to do it, then when Trump comes in office, he stops the dog and pony show.

Perhaps someone should inform you that Biden is president until Jan 20th. Musk owns Tesla and Trump is nothing more than a president elect at this point.

Dems last chance to pork up a spending bill, with help from a few greedy Repubs. Let them have their last hurrah.

And no back pay. The government workers I know were thrilled with an additional paid vacation the last time - and were disappointed when the shutdown ended.
How about airports? Shut those down?
