Pope's Condition Worsening

VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II's medical condition has worsened, the Italian news agency Apcom reported Thursday night, citing unidentified sources. The Vatican had no immediate comment on the report.

Apcom said doctors had to intervene because of a "worrying lowering of (blood) pressure."

The news agency also said the pope reportedly had a high fever.

A Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he was unaware of such a worsening in the pontiff's health and that at least a few hours ago, the pope's situation was "regular."

I know that there are few Catholics here. I know that the Church has been under a cloud for a problem of it's own making. That doesn't change all the good things this man has done, for the Church or for the world. He was the number 2 or number 1 man with Reagan at bringing down USSR.

My prayers are with him.

Where is there such a prophecy?

Doesn't matter. I dont think he will last through the weekend. Im glad he was Pope though. He helped Reagan bring down the Commies. He has my respect for that.

Oh and FYI I am probably going to move this into the religion section eventually. But i figured id leave it here for a bit to get some notice. Course if someone else wants to move it i wont stop it.

The Blessed Sounds of Silence
Pope John Paul II, teacher.

By Marc A. Thiessen

For the first time in his 26-year pontificate, Pope John Paul II failed to come to his window Easter Monday, unable to deliver even a silent blessing to the crowd in St. Peter's Square. The day before, he did appear with an Easter Sunday address in hand — but when he opened his mouth, he was unable to speak. A tearful crowd watched as he tried repeatedly, in obvious pain, to deliver his prepared blessing, before slumping back into his chair — banging his fist in clear frustration.

But the pilgrims gathered at St. Peter's — and millions more watching across the world — received greater spiritual nourishment from his silent Easter witness than they ever could have from the text of his remarks. They know that, far from burdening on the Church, this time when John Paul is physically weakest may well be the greatest of his papacy. Here is why: The principal task of the pope is not the effective management of the Church bureaucracy — it is to serve as an effective witness for Christ in the world. John Paul does this more eloquently today, through his silent suffering, than he ever did with words. It does not really matter if he can use his voice intelligibly — or at all. By carrying on, despite his afflictions, he stands as a living rebuke to our utilitarian culture — and a living witness to the value of every life, especially the elderly and infirm.

In carrying on, John Paul also offers us a precious gift: his suffering. It is hard to see him suffer. But this pope does not ask for relief from his sufferings. To the contrary, a bishop once told me that the pope used to refuse medication precisely because it interfered with his suffering. He has a mystical relationship with his suffering, offering it up for us, and for the whole world — a world that increasingly embraces the culture of death, euthanasia, and the abortion of disabled fetuses, because it mistakenly believes there is no greater moral good than relief from suffering. In bearing his pain, John Paul says to us, in union with the Apostle Paul, "I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions."

We need his example in this world filled with suffering. We need the lesson he is teaching us: that suffering is not useless; that it can have meaning, and salvific power. As John Paul wrote in his 1984 encyclical On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering, once this meaning and power are discovered, suffering actually becomes "a source of joy" because "faith in sharing the suffering of Christ brings with it the interior certainty that the suffering person...is serving, like Christ, the salvation of his brothers and sisters. Therefore he is carrying out an irreplaceable service."

It was one thing to hear such words delivered eleven years ago by a vigorous John Paul — the avid outdoorsman who loved to ski and climb mountains. It is quite another to see these words lived by a suffering John Paul, who has been forced by age and infirmity to give up such beloved pursuits — and who now struggles simply to say a Mass or deliver a homily. Today, as he struggles on, John Paul infuses a quarter-century of teaching with new credibility — and new meaning.

In his book The Problem of Pain, C.S. Lewis wrote, "You would like to know how I behave when I am experiencing pain, not just writing books about it....I will tell you; I am a great coward." Most of us are. So our world needs this struggling pope, who inspires millions of frail and elderly people. We need his example, which affirms the continuing value of every human person who feels isolated by illness and abandoned by a society. And we need to be reminded that we all have responsibilities to the weakest among us — to help them live in dignity, and to value the gift of their presence, whatever their condition, at every stage of their lives.

In that encyclical over a decade ago, the Holy Father said this about the suffering of others: "When the body is gravely ill, totally incapacitated, and the person is almost incapable of living and acting, all the more do interior maturity and spiritual greatness become evident, constituting a touching lesson to those who are healthy and normal." Today, as his own body grows increasingly incapacitated, and as he becomes less capable of living and acting, it is John Paul's spiritual greatness that is becoming all the more evident — and he is teaching the world anew.

How blessed we are to have such a teacher in our midst; to receive the precious gift of his suffering; and to be living witnesses to what may one day be considered the greatest days of the greatest papacy in history. John Paul was once asked why he does not retire, and is said to have given this reply: "Because Christ did not come down from the Cross." The Lord will take him from us when He is ready. 'Til then, give us this silent pope.

Doesn't sound good.

Pope's Health Takes Turn for Worse with High Fever
Thu Mar 31, 2005 05:23 PM ET

By Philip Pullella and Crispian Balmer
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - - Pope John Paul has developed a very high fever caused by a urinary infection, the Vatican said on Thursday, in a major worsening of his already fragile health.

The Pope, leader of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics and widely dubbed the "Great Communicator" at the height of his papacy when he traveled the globe, was receiving "appropriate antibiotic therapy," it said in a statement.

"The Holy Father was today stricken by a very high fever provoked by what has been ascertained to be an infection of the urinary tract ... The clinical situation is being closely watched by the Vatican medical team treating him."

There were unconfirmed Italian media reports the 84-year-old Pope had received a sacrament in which the sick and dying are anointed with special oils. The Vatican had no comment, but Church sources said it was likely the Pontiff had received the sacrament, given the precarious state of his health.

Sky Italia television said John Paul, thrust into the world limelight when he became pope on October 16, 1978, had not been taken to hospital because his weak health would make the trip too perilous.

The Polish-born Pontiff, who has also been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for years, has been convalescing from throat surgery for more than a month and aides said earlier on Thursday he was disappointed by the slow pace of his recovery.

MAJOR LEGACY

The Pope, one of whose major legacies according to historians will be his role in the fall of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989, underwent the tracheotomy on Feb. 24. He spent 28 days in Rome's Gemelli Hospital in two periods in February and March.

On Wednesday, doctors inserted a feeding tube through the Pope's nose and into his stomach to try to boost his strength and help his recovery. He has had a breathing tube in his throat since the Feb. 24 operation

Vatican officials interviewed by Reuters earlier on Thursday said they were increasingly pessimistic about the Pope making a full recovery from his ailments.

"Hardly anyone thinks the situation will improve but everyone is hoping for a miracle," said one official.

A senior cardinal, Christoph Schoenborn of Vienna, said the Pope was "approaching, as far as a person can tell, the end of his life," the Austrian news agency APA reported.

John Paul, the third longest-serving pope in Roman Catholic history, has had difficulty swallowing because Parkinson's Disease limits muscle movement.

Poles believe John Paul's unflagging support for the banned Solidarity trade union in the 1980s while communists tried to crush it was a potent force in keeping the movement alive.

Solidarity formed the East Bloc's first non-communist government in 1989, marking the start of a wave of freedom which saw Marxist regimes fall like dominoes across Europe.

A decade after witnessing the fall of communism, the Pope fulfilled another of his dreams. He visited the Holy Land in March 2000, and, praying at Jerusalem's Western Wall, he asked forgiveness for Catholic sins against Jews over the centuries.

TIRELESS TRAVELLER

A tireless traveler who has clocked up some 775,000 miles in 104 foreign trips to some 130 countries, the Pope is a familiar figure across the globe. He has drawn crowds of up to four million people.

He has been determined to use his office to draw attention to the plight of the world's neediest and oppressed while at the same time keeping a firm and conservative grip on his Church.

"I speak in the name of those who have no voice," he said on a trip to Africa in 1980.

He has felt just as much at ease lecturing dictators of the left and the right as he has telling leaders of world democracies that unbridled capitalism and globalization are no panacea to the world's post-Cold War problems.

A strong defender of human rights and religious freedom, his calls for a "new world economic order" and defense of workers' rights have led some to call him "the socialist pope."

A former actor who wrote several plays, John Paul has used his mastery of timing, levity and languages to communicate like few other world figures of modern times.

There was a Priest on Coast to Coast AM the other night that predicted that This Pope would go into exile after a group tried to kill him. They would have a closed casket service saying he was dead but after 8 months the Pope would come back to Rome and vanquish a false pope that was presiding there.

He also predicted the US would be invaded at the time the Pope went into exile.

Here's the dudes website.

And the stuff he talked about that night.

http://www.coasttocoastam.com/shows/2005/03/16.html

Here is a timeline of events that Wingate laid out: The Pope will be cured of a serious illness, but shortly after that he will go into exile for eight months, though the world will be told he has died. During this period he will "bilocate" and communicate with various religious communities. Around the time of the exile, the United States will be invaded by a united Russian and Chinese army, aided by additional communist forces. The US will already be fighting a war on three fronts when this happens.

He outlined the devastating consequences of the invasion, which he expects to take place no later than four years from now: Around 30% of the US population will die before the invaders are stopped outside of Omaha, with some of the greatest losses occurring in Texas and the southern half of the country.

Wingate predicted that the assassination of the leaders of France and Germany would precede the U.S. invasion. He also described a vision of an airborne bacteria that would take many lives, though he did not specify a time frame for this.

Sounds like he is mixing the Bible and fantasy.... Would make a great book or movie!

Pope in sharp turn for worse with fever, infection

By Philip Pullella and Crispian Balmer

VATICAN CITY, April 1 (Reuters) - Pope John Paul's fragile health took a sharp turn for the worse as he developed a very high fever caused by a urinary infection, the Vatican said.

Italian media said the 84-year-old Pontiff, who is struggling to recover from throat surgery, had received the sacrament for the sick and dying, commonly known as the Last Rites. It is given to the very seriously ill but does not mean necessarily that death is imminent.

"He's ill, very ill," an unnamed medical source was quoted as saying by Italy's Ansa news agency on Friday.

Last rites, extreme unction, anointing of the sick are all the same thing.
