It was very much like a grand jury. The prosecution had total control of the proceedings, the prosecution chose what evidence and testimony was introduced and nothing exculpatory was permitted. The defendant wasn't allowed any participation or the opportunity to refute any of the prosecutions case. That's why there is an old saying that a prosecutor can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich.
