There's an ex-Marine, Paul Whelan, in jail in Russia because the Russians said he was spying. If he was spying, then our government knew and should have made a deal for him years ago. If he wasn't spying then our government knew and should have demanded his release in the strongest of terms including sanctions, and even considering a trade, to get him home.
Then we have this black, lesbian, athlete, 100% proven guilty of the crime she was accused of in Russia, and now we make a deal?
When Americans commit drug, sex, or other non-political crimes in foreign countries, the American government should do absolutely nothing to help them other than to make sure they get as fair of a trial as the other government's practices allow.
