I once watched an interview with a high ranking pentagon in general where he explained why we spend so much. He mentioned that being number one is very expensive.. being number one means you have to be ready to take on number two and number three should they decide to team up. I thought that was a reasonable explanation. Like he said do the math it's pretty simple.

The fallacy of that explanation is that the US has strong military alliances and is not only number one but three, four, six and seven through twenty.

NATO is the strongest military alliance in history. It has worked for 70 years. Along with S Korea, Japan, Australia, Philippines, Taiwan…..we are more than capable of taking on Russia and China

It's not just the direct funding we do of NATO that drives its expense. How much money have we spent to constantly expand NATO in order to feed the weapon's companies? 178 billion in Ukraine alone on this one war. The requirement to maintain bases, weapons systems, troops etc etc is another added cost of NATO. NATO membership is wildly expensive and we (the US) gain little to nothing from it. There's nothing we have done or are currently doing that requires NATO membership. The only people benefiting from our continue participation in that alliance are Europe and the weapons companies.
