No, Ira Hayes was not part of the first flag-raising detail on Iwo Jima. He was one of the six Marines involved in the second flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, which was famously captured in the iconic photograph by Joe Rosenthal2. The first flag raised was smaller and later replaced by a larger one to ensure visibility.
The second flag-raising became a symbol of American resilience and victory during World War II. Hayes, a Pima Native American, gained recognition for his role in this historic moment but struggled with the fame that followed3.

Yeah ... So what ...
The only reason you know Ira Hayes' name ... Because he was Native American ... And DEI.
Ira Hayes did nothing more than any of the other Marines there at the second raising did.
Believe me ... He didn't paddle a fucking canoe to Iwo Jima.
He sold War Bonds when he returned to the States ...
With two of the white Marines that were also at the second flag raising ...
But don't have their own web page.
They couldn't get some of the white guys from the first flag raising ...
Because they were killed before the second one ...
But they don't have a web page about their sacrifice.
Ira Hayes was not the only Native American on Iwo Jima ... However, he was the only one in the propaganda photo.
The only reason you know his name ... Is because he was Native American ... And he didn't even make that choice ...
His parents did roughly nine months before he was born.
What makes Ira Hayes remarkable and a hero to me ... Was the fact he was a Marine on Iwo Jima.
That doesn't have shit to do with the fact he was Native American ... Just part of the Corp ...
And there was a shitload of other awesome Marines on Iwo Jima ... That don't have their own webpage ...
That could be one of the reasons he struggled with the fame ...
Because they made him famous for reasons other than what he may have thought he earned.
He was at Iwo Jima ... And knew the sacrifices that were made.
