A drone attack on an American base in Jordan killed three U.S. military personnel and wounded at least 25 others Saturday.

President Biden on Sunday laid the blame for the strike on “radical Iran-backed militant groups” operating inside Syria and Iraq.

It marked the first time American service members have been killed after months of drone and missile attacks on U.S. troops who are based there to advise local Iraqi and Kurdish forces combatting the remnants of the Islamic State terror group. The strikes began not long after the Paelstinian militant group Hamas killed at least 1,200 people, mostly civilians, during their Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel.

In a statement, Mr. Biden said he was grieving the loss of the still-unidentified U.S. personnel.

“The three American service members we lost were patriots in the highest sense, and their ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten by our nation,” the president said. He vowed that those who carried out the drone strike would be held responsible “at a time and in a matter of our choosing.”
