Memphis megachurch pastor Andy Savage received a standing ovation in church on Sunday after apologizing for assaulting a woman when she was a high school student.

Church ovation as pastor accused of sexually assaulting teen apologizes for his ‘sin’
Christian Publisher Cancels Marriage Book by Pastor Andy Savage After He Admits to Sexually Assaulting Teen

A few things to note:
  1. "more than 20 years ago" - this is said repeatedly and is meant to minimize what happened
  2. he continues to call it a sexual "incident" rather than sexual assault
  3. he says he took full responsibility for his actions, but what he did was actually illegal, and he did not take any take any legal responsibility
  4. he says he shared every aspect of what he did with his wife before he asked her to marry him - the implicit framing here is that the issue is about sexual purity rather than sexual assault and abuse of power
  5. he says "I never sought to cover this up" - but where in all his teaching about sexual purity has he admitted to sexually assaulting a minor under his spiritual care?
  6. the lead pastor prays that God would touch the heart of the victim and "heal her of the pain that was caused from this sin 20 years ago" - notice again the minimizing use of the time frame, as well as the use of the word "sin"
  7. the use of the word "sin" carries the subtle implication of her participation in a shared failure rather than her victimization
  8. the lead pastor says "Guess what, this sin did not happen in the last couple days. This sin happened over 20 years ago. That does not minimize the sin." - I can't see why they would continue to emphasize how long ago this happened for any reason other than to minimize it
  9. the lead pastor says, "none of us want anyone to throw a stone. Why? Because you never heal by hurting others." - the implication is that telling the truth is throwing a stone, and that asking for the truth to be told is hurtful

I think the average age of a first year high school student in that state is over the age of consent. According to the press release you supplied she was one year OVER the age of consent at 17.

12 is legal in mexico

Points one through nine well taken. Mr. Purity Himself didn't apologize until after Woodson exposed his "sin." Arguing "age of consent" is really meaningless in a situation in which an experienced adult, who is a clergy member teaching abstinence, deliberately drives a 17-year-old, who probably has not ever been in a sexual situation before, to a secluded area to take sexual advantage of her. I wonder if these people who gave this guy an ovation would have responded the same way if he had done the same thing to a 17-year-old boy.

So many of the people who claim to be Christians nowadays are nothing but hypocrites. And these "megachurches" all seem to be run by kooks.

Jewish "rabbis" have been known to rape their own pre-teen daughters. It is anti-semitic to report those facts though. As far as Blacks, they look the same relatively speaking because most are derived from only a few African warlord rapists.

Yep. Leftists keep expecting christians to live absolutely spotless lives, even though they love to remind us they don't.

Here's a little"secret." There are no perfect christians.

Now look at your own atheistic schools where you send YOUR children each and every day.

Their god got away with raping a virgin. Except it hasn't apologized yet. So the pastor's got that going for him at least.

in TN its 18.
We believe in kids at least having 3/4 developed lungs before getting groped by AARP perverts.

MarcATL, that's a little deep for this audience, you'll confuse them as the replies show. I wonder didn't Franken apologize and how did our religious feel about him? Hear any cheers? No need to answer as tribalism takes over the mind. The intro was like a Broadway production, unreal, I've never quite understood the cultist aspect of religions, the ceremonial fan like emotion and trance like singing and praising. I didn't listen to the entire piece, but the apology from the one pastor was a bit much. The Mary Magdalena episode, 'he without sin cast the first stone', do religious follow that in real life one wonders. And then one poster makes it partisan too funny. I think the audience got tied up in the emotion of the moment, fans rather than thinkers or parents, but the church and the publisher are taking it a bit more serious.

reminds me of Jimmy Swaggart condemning Jim Baker--then is caught ''sinning'' with a prostitute
TV evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who had pursued sexual misconduct allegations against Bakker, told a luncheon that the furor nearly caused him to give up the ministry.

Kinda like liberals has a nine year old boy, modeling for them in drag? That kinda taking advantage of. Now after that, I think what the pastor did was sick, like the way Clinton took advantage of a young intern.

I think it's a sin for which he will have to answer to God.

I also think some people allow this kind of thing to fester and ruin them. Many, if not most, 17-year old black American girls have at least one child. No father just a baby daddy. So if you feel like fretting yourself to death, there's something for you to worry about.
