Police were originally formed in England because people hated being policed by military "red coats". Cops wore blue to clearly differentiate from military. ..despite not acting much different than red coats did.

Many want cops demilitarized. Yet...globally we see these attacks using big guns and explosives. No one knows when or where. And most times that police department will be caught by surprise. Sydney. Paris. New York. And smaller places...Columbine. Virginia Tech. Aurora.

So...do we let cops be ready for what is unlikely in any particular place...but GUARANTEED to happen somewhere someday? Every attack somewhere will be preceded by folks who think it would never happen there.

In 1935, the French police used a variety of side arms, both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, notably comprising the MAS 1873, the MAS 1892, the FN M1900, Ruby pistols, and a variety of privately purchased weapons.

How should the cops have acted...other than "like military"?
